لَوْلاَwere it not for الحِمَىthe sanctuary وَصَبَايَاand maidens بِالْحِمَىwithin the sanctuary عُرُبُamorous

Were it not for the sanctuary and amorous maidens within it,
I would have no longing for the lightning of Najd.
حَلَّتْloosened عُقُودَthe knots اصْطِبَارِيof my endurance دُوْنَهُbefore it حُلَلٌrobes

Robes before it have loosened the knots of my endurance;
their rights, like my raptures, are due to them.
وَفِيand in رِيَاضِthe gardens بِيوُتِthe homes الحَيِّof the clan مِنْin إِضَمٍIḍam

And in the gardens of the clan's homes at Iḍam
are freshly picked roses, and in their sleeves are slender boughs.
يَسْقِيwaters الأَقَاحِيَthe daisies مِنْهَاfrom them قُرْقُفٌwine فإِذَاand when

Wine from them waters the daisies; and when
the bubbles gleam upon them, their name is the cool lustre of teeth.

كُلِّall القُلُوبِthe hearts قَضَاءٌa judgment مَاnot لَهُfor it سَبَبُa cause
Through them, the gazers' eyes win judgment against
all hearts—a judgment that has no cause
إِلاَّexcept تَمَارُضَfeigned languor أَجْفَانٍof eyelids إِذَاwhen سَلَبَتْthey rob

except the feigned languor of eyelids; when they rob,
then what their intent demands is the robbed one, not the booty.
وَلِيand I have لَدَىat الحِلَّةِthe encampment الفَيْحَاءِspacious غُصْنُa bough نَقَاa sand dune

يَهْفُوsways فَيَجْذِبُهُthen draws it خَفْقٌa flutter فَيَنْجَذِبُso it is drawn
And at the spacious encampment I have a bough upon a dune;
it sways; a flutter draws it, and it yields.
لاَnot يَقْدِرُcan الحِبُّthe beloved أنْto يُخْفِيconceal مَحَاسِنَهُhis charms
وَإِنَّمَاand rather فِيin سَنَاهُhis radiance الْحُجْبُthe veils تَحْتَجِبُare veiled
The beloved cannot conceal his charms;
rather, in his radiance the veils themselves are veiled.
أُعَاهِدُI pledge to الرَّاحَthe wine أَنَّىthat I لاَnot أُفَارِقُهَاI part from it
مِنْfor أَجْلِthe sake of أَنَّthat الثَّنَايَاthe front teeth شِبْهُهُاtheir likeness الحَبَبُthe bubbles
I pledge to wine that I shall not part from it,
because its bubbles resemble the front teeth.
وَأَرْقُبُand I watch البَرْقَthe lightning لاَسُقْيَاهُnot its rain مِنْof أَربَىmy desire
لَكِنَّهُbut it مِثْلُlike خَدَّيْهِhis two cheeks لَهُit has لَهَبُa flame
And I watch the lightning—not because I desire its rain,
but because, like his cheeks, it has a flame.
يَاO سَالِماًone spared فِيin الهَوَىlove مِمَاfrom what أُكَابِدُهُI endure it
رِفْقَاًgently بِأَحْشَاءِwith the entrails of صَبٍّa passionate lover شَفَّهَاwasted them الوَصَبُaffliction
O you who, in love, are spared what I endure,
be gentle with a lover's entrails, wasted by affliction.
فَالأَجْرُso the reward يَاO أَمَليmy hope إِنْif كُنْتَyou were تَكْسِبُهُyou earn it
مِنْfrom كُلِّevery ذِيone with كَبِدٍa liver حَرَّاءَburning تَكْتَسِبُyou earn
So if you would earn reward, O my hope,
you earn it from everyone with a burning liver.
يَاO بَدرَfull moon تَمٍّperfection مُحَاقِيmy darkening فِيin زِيَادَتِهِits waxing
ماnot أَنْthat تَنْجَلِيclear away عَنْfrom أُفْقِكَyour horizon السُّحُبُthe clouds
O perfect full moon, in whose waxing lies my darkening,
the clouds never clear from your horizon.

The drunkards have sobered, but my intoxication with you endures; and there is no
cause one can recount for this intoxication, nor any lineage.
قَدْhas أَيَّسَdriven to despair الصَّبْرَpatience وَالسِّلْوَانَand solace أَيْسَرُهُits slightest degree

وَعَاقَبَand punished الصِّبَّthe passionate lover عَنْfor آمَالِهِhis hopes الوَصَبُaffliction
Its slightest degree has driven patience and solace to despair,
and affliction has punished the lover for his hopes.
وَكُلَّمَاand whenever لاَحَgleamed يَاO دَمْعِيmy tears وَمِيضُa flash سَنىًof radiance

And whenever, O my tears, a flash of radiance gleams,
you pour down; and if an east wind blows, O my heart, you throb.
