    وَغَيْرَ وَلاَكُمْ عَبْدُكُمْ مَا تَكَسْبا

    Upon your love I have spent the whole store of my tears;

    apart from devotion to you, your servant has gained nothing.

    حَلِيفَ هَوىً بالرُّوحِ فِيْكُمْ تَقَرَّبا

    Far be it from you to banish from your presence

    one sworn to love, who with his very soul drew near to you;

    or to forsake one whose eyelid sleeplessness has never left,

    and whose love for you was disciplined until he grew refined.

    You perfected his training through your aloofness—

    so do not forsake him now that he has learned his manners.

    فَكَيْفَ تَرى عَنْكُمْ مَدَى الدَّهِرْ مَذْهَبا

    I have a soul whose creed and debt is ardent love;

    how, then, could it ever see a path leading away from you?

    Beneath the shade of the two sarḥ trees I have a resting place,

    where we donned a mantle of union, embroidered with gold.

    وَتَصْبُوا إِلى الأَلْحَانِ شَجْواً فَتْطْرَبا

    It delights you to hear its ringdoves recount their tales,

    and yearningly you incline to the melodies and are enraptured;

    and to breathe in fragrances borne upon its gentle breezes,

    and thus discern the flowers’ meaning in the speech of the east wind.
