إلىto الرَّاحِthe wine هُبَّواrise حِينَwhen تَدْعُوcall المَثَالِثُthe lute’s third strings
فَمَاfor … not الرَّاحُwine لِلأَرْوَاحِfor the spirits إِلاَّexcept بَوَاعِثُrousing forces
Rise to the wine when the lute’s third strings call,
For wine is nothing but an awakener of spirits.
هِيَit الجَوْهَرُthe essence الصَّرْفُpure القَدِيمُeternal فَإِنَand if بَداappears
لَهَاupon it حَبَبٌfoam نِيْطَتْit was attached بهِto it فَهْوَthen it is حَادِثُnewly arisen
It is the pure, eternal essence; and if there appears
Foam upon it, to which it is bound, that foam is newly arisen.
تَمَزَّزْتُهَاI sipped it slowly صِرْفاًunmixed فَلَمَّاand when تَصَرَّفَتْit took effect

I sipped it unmixed; and when it took effect,
A playful drunkenness held sway among my breastbones.
وَفَاحَand wafted forth شَذَاthe fragrance أَنْفَاسِهَاof its breaths فَتَضَرَّرَتْso were harmed

And the fragrance of its breaths wafted forth, bringing harm to
Souls over which ignorance tyrannizes and wreaks havoc.
حَلَفْتُI swore لَهُمْto them مَاnot كَاسُهاits cup غَيرُother than ذَاتِهَاits own essence
فَقَالُواso they said افْتَدِransom yourself فِيهَاconcerning it فَإِنَّكَfor indeed you حَانِثُhave broken your oath
I swore to them: its cup is nothing other than its own essence.
So they said, “Make amends for it, for you have broken your oath.”
وَمَاand nothing غَيْرُother than أَضْوَاءِthe lights الأَشَّعةِof the rays أَوْهَمَتْmisled
فَقَالُواso they said لَهَاit has فيin الحُسْنِbeauty ثَانٍa second وَثالِثُand a third
And nothing but the radiance of the rays had misled them,
So they said, “It has a second and a third in beauty.”
إِقِمْremain رَيْثَّمَاuntil تُفْنِيكَit effaces you عَنْهَاfrom it بِوصْفِهَاthrough its description
وَتَذْهَبُand you depart عَمَّاfrom whatever مِنْكَwithin you فِيهَاabout it يُبَاحِثُdebates
Remain until, through its description, it effaces you from awareness of it,
And you leave behind whatever in you disputes about it.
فَإِنْso if شَاهَدَتْbeheld مِنْكَof yours العُيُونُthe eyes عُيونَهَاits eyes
ظَفِرْتَyou have triumphed وَإِلاَّand otherwise فالعُيونُthen the eyes أَخابِثُvile things
So if your eyes behold its eyes,
You have triumphed; otherwise, the eyes are vile.
وَإِنْand if لَمْhas not تُبَدِّلْreplaced آيةٌa sign مِنْكَwithin you آيَةًa sign

And if one sign within you has not replaced another sign
Through what has been said about it, depart, for you remain.

Its tale became disguised in Shem and Ham,
And grew elusive, so Japheth did not grasp its meaning.
وَماand … not لَبِثَتْit dwelt فِيin الدَّهْرِtime يَوْماًfor a day وَإِنَّمَاbut rather

And it never dwelt in time for a single day; rather,
It is time that dwells within it, if you reflect.
