يَاO ساكِنينَdwellers بِقَلْبِيin my heart
مَتَىwhen أَفُوزُshall I attain بِقُرْبِnearness
O you who dwell within my heart,
O you who dwell in my heart,
when shall I attain nearness?
When shall I attain nearness?
سَلَبَتُمُونِيyou have robbed me وَلَكِنْand yet
أَنَاI السَّعِيدُthe happy one بِسَلْبِيin my being robbed
You have robbed me of myself, yet
You have robbed me, and yet
I rejoice in being robbed.
I am happy in being robbed.
يَاO عُرْبَArabs وَاديَvalley of المُصَلاَّal-Musalla
لأَنْتُمُsurely you خَيْرُthe best of عُرْبِArabs
O Arabs of Wadi al-Musalla,
O Arabs of Wadi al-Musalla,
you truly are the noblest Arabs.
You are surely the finest of Arabs.
نَزِيلُكُمyour guest مُسْتَهَامُlove-stricken
مُوَلَّهُdistraught with love القَلْبِthe heart مَسْبيheld captive
Your guest is madly enamored,
Your guest is love-stricken,
his bewildered heart held captive.
Distraught with love at heart, held captive.
وَلَسْتُand I do not أَسْلُوforget هَوَاكُمْlove for you
حَاشَاfar be it from غَرَامِيmy passion وَحُبِّيand my love
Never could I forget your love—
Nor do I cease loving you—
my passion and my love forbid it.
Far be it from my passion and my love!
إذاif رَضِيتُمْyou consent تَلاَفِيmy rescue
فَذَاكَthen that مَطْلُوبُthe desire of قَلْبِيmy heart
If you consent to restore me,
If you consent to rescue me,
that is my heart’s desire.
Then that is my heart's desire.
رُوحِيmy soul لَكُمْyours إِنْif قَبِلْتُمْyou accept
وَالرُّوحُand the soul جَهْدُutmost effort المُحِبِّthe lover
My spirit is yours, if you accept it—
My soul is yours, if you accept it,
a lover can offer nothing more than his soul.
And the soul is the lover's utmost offering.
أَنْتُمْyou ذَخِيرَةُthe treasure of قَلْبِيmy heart
يَوْمَon the day of المَعَادِthe Return وَحَسْبِيand all I need
You are the treasure of my heart
You are my heart's treasure
on Resurrection Day, and you suffice me.
On the Day of Return, and all I need.
I have loved you passionately وَبِحَقِّيand it is my right
إِنْif تِهْتُI swagger مِنْfrom فَرْطِthe excess of عُجْبيmy pride
I have loved you—and rightly so,
I have loved you, and I am justified
if I exult from the fullness of my pride.
If I swagger in my excessive pride,
وَمِلْتُand I swayed سُكْراًin drunkenness وَلِمْand why لاَnot
وَمِنْكُمُand from you كَانَwas شُرْبيmy drink
I sway with drunkenness—and why not,
And sway drunkenly—and why not,
when from you came my wine?
Since my drink came from you?
وَقَدْand indeed سَقَانِيgave me drink حَبِيبيmy beloved
وَخَصَّنِيand singled me out دُونَto the exclusion of صَحْبِيmy companions
My beloved has given me drink
And my beloved has indeed given me drink,
and singled me out above my companions.
And singled me out, not my companions.
وَلَسْتُand I do not بَعْدَafter عَيَانِيmy firsthand seeing
جَهْراًopenly سَنَاthe radiance of وَجْهِthe face of رَبِّيmy Lord
Now that I have openly beheld
And I do not, after beholding
the radiance of my Lord’s face, I no longer
In plain sight the radiance of my Lord's face,
أَصْبُوyearn لِرَنْدٍfor laurel وَبَانٍand ben trees
وَذِكْرِand the remembrance of غَارٍa cave وَكُثْبِand sand dunes
yearn for fragrant rand or willow trees,
Yearn for laurel and ben trees,
nor for tales of a cave or dunes.
Or the remembrance of a cave and dunes.
