ياO بَرْقَlightning نَجْدٍNajd هَلْwhether حَكَيْتَyou mirrored فُؤَادِيmy heart
فِيin ذَاthis التَّلَّهُبِblazing والخُفُوقِand fluttering البَادِيvisible
O lightning of Najd, have you mirrored my heart
in this blazing and this visible fluttering?
لَوْلاَwere it not for اشْتِرَاكُsharing هَوَاكُمَاthe love of you both لمْnot تَسْفَحَاyou both shed
دَمْعَيْكُمَاthe tears of you both فيin سَفْحِthe slope ذَاكَthat الوَادِيthe valley
Were it not for the love you both share, you would not have shed
your tears on the slope of that valley.
أَتُرىَdo you suppose? سُوَيْكِنَةُlittle female dweller الحِمَىthe sanctuary بِجَمَالِهَاwith her beauty
سَلَبَتْshe stole رُقَادَكَyour sleep فيin الهَوىlove وَرُقَادِيand my sleep
Do you suppose the little dweller of the sanctuary, with her beauty,
has stolen your sleep in love, and mine?
عَرَّضْتُI exposed قَلْبِيmy heart يَوْمَthe day رَامَةَRama إِذْwhen بَدَتْshe appeared
بِنَوَاظِرٍwith eyes تَحْكيresemble حُدُودَedges حِدَادِsharp
I exposed my heart that day at Rama, when she appeared
with eyes resembling sharp blade-edges.
وَسَأَلْتُهَاand I asked her سَلْبِيto rob me لِعِلْمِيَbecause I knew أَنْthat مَنْwhoever
سَلَبَتْهُshe robbed him صَارَbecame أَمِيرَprince ذَاكَthat النَّادِيthe gathering
And I asked her to rob me, knowing that whoever
she robbed became the prince of that gathering.
وَأَغَنَّand a sweet-voiced one تَعْشَقُadore لَيْنَهُhis suppleness قُضُبُbranches النَّقَاthe sand dune
إِنْif مَاسَswayed gracefully أَهْيَفُslender-waisted قَدِّهِhis stature الميَادِswaying
And a sweet-voiced one, whose suppleness the dune's branches adore
when his slender, swaying figure moves gracefully,
يسقِيgives drink to الندِيمَthe drinking companion بِكَأْسِهِwith his cup وَبِلَحْظِهِand with his glance
وَبِثَغْرِهِand with his lips رَيّاًto satiety فَيُصْبِحُso he becomes صَادِيthirsty
gives his drinking companion drink with his cup and with his glance,
and with his lips, to satiety—yet the companion grows thirsty.
مَاذَاكَthat is not إِلاَّexcept أَنَّthat وَقَّادَthe kindler الجَوَىlonging
بَيْنَbetween الجَوَانِحِthe ribs دَائِمُunceasing الإِيْقَادِkindling
That is only because the kindler of longing
between the ribs is forever kindling.
وَيَبِيتُand he spends the night أَدْنَىnearer لِلحَشَاto the heart مِنْthan مُهْجَتِيmy lifeblood
وَأَبِيتُand I spend the night أَشْكُوI complain مِنْهُof him فَرْطَexcess بُعَادِremoteness
And he spends the night nearer my heart than my lifeblood,
while I spend the night lamenting his utter remoteness.
فَكَأَنَّمَاso it is as though نَهْوَىwe long for اتحَادَoneness وَصِالِنَاour union
شَغَفاًpassionately وَنَكْرَهُand we hate فُرْقَةَseparation التَّعْدَادِmultiplicity
So it is as though we long for the oneness of our union,
passionately, and hate the division of multiplicity.
