يَاO خَدَّهُhis cheek وَثَنَايَاand the front teeth ثَغْرِهِof his mouth النّضِدِneatly arrayed
مَنْwho سَوّغَpermitted الجَمْعَthe joining بَيْنَbetween الجَمْرِthe embers وَالبَرَدِand the hail
O his cheek and the neatly arrayed front teeth of his mouth!
Who permitted embers and hail to come together?
وَيَاand O تَلَهُّبَblaze قَلْبِيmy heart فِيamid مَحَاسِنِهِhis beauties
قَدْindeed أُعْجِزَwas unable الدَّمْعُthe tears أَنْto يُطْفِيكَextinguish you فَاتَّقِدِso burn on
O blaze of my heart amid his beauty,
Tears have failed to extinguish you, so burn on.
مَاwhat ضَرَّwould harm مِعْطَفَكَyour form البَّادِيthe apparent تَأَوُّدُهُits bending
لَوْif كَانَit were يُبْقِيit spared تَثَنِّيةِbending عَلىupon أَوَدِيmy bentness
What harm would it do your form, whose graceful sway is plain,
If its bending spared my bent frame?
وَصَلْتَyou joined هَجْرَكَyour abandonment إِعْرِاضاًwith turning away لِتَقْطَعَنِيto sever me
أَمَاhas not كَفَاكَsufficed you الذِّيwhat أَخْلَدْتَyou lodged فِيin خَلَدِيmy heart
You have added coldness to your abandonment to cut me off.
Is what you have lodged in my heart not enough for you?
لَوْif كَانَit were يَعْلَمُit knew طَرْفِيmy eye أَنْthat يَزيدَit would increase ظَماًthirst
فِيin وِرْدِهِits drinking مَاءَthe water ذَاكَof that الحُسْنِbeauty لَمْit would not يَرِدِdrink
If my eye knew it would grow thirstier
By drinking the water of that beauty, it would not drink.
فاليَوْمَso today مِنْfrom فَرْطِthe excess of إِلْفِيmy familiarity بِالصَّبَابَةِwith longing لَوْif
تَرُومُyou seek نُقْصَانَthe lessening مَاof what أَلْقَىI suffer لَقُلْتُI would say زِدِincrease it
Today, so accustomed am I to longing that if
You sought to lessen what I suffer, I would say, ‘More.’
فَلاَso do not تُغِبْbe absent نَاظِراًfrom a gazing eye تَلْقَاكَthat meets you عَبْرَتُهُits tears
فالشَّمْسُfor the sun تُسْبِلُmakes flow دَمْعَthe tears الأَعْيُنِof the eyes الرُّمُدِthe inflamed
So do not vanish from an eye whose tears greet you:
The sun makes inflamed eyes shed tears.
