أَيَاO عَرَبَArabs الجَرْعَاءِal-Jarʿāʾ مَنْfrom أَيْمَنِthe right side of الشِّعْبِthe ravine
بِكُمْfor you لاَnot بِشَيءٍfor anything غَيْرِكُمْother than you شَغَفُpassion الصِّبَّthe ardent lover
O Arabs of al-Jarʿāʾ, from the ravine’s right side,
For you—not for anything besides you—is the ardent lover’s passion.
أَلَمْdid you not تَعِدُونَاpromise us أَنْthat نَرَاكُمْwe would see you بِذِيat Dhū الفَضَاal-Faḍā (the open expanse)
أَظُنُّكُمُI think you تَعْنَونَmean أَنَّthat الغَضَاthe ghaḍā shrub قَلْبِيmy heart
Did you not promise us that we would see you at Dhū al-Faḍā?
I think you mean that my heart is the ghaḍā shrub.
غَرَاماًpassionate love بِكُمْfor you والنَّارُand the fire يَضْرمُهَاkindles it الصَّبَاthe east wind
أَقَولُI say عَلىupon نَارِيmy fire بِكُمْfor you لِلصَّبَاto the east wind هُبِّيblow!
In passion for you, while the east wind kindles the fire,
I tell the east wind: “Blow upon my fire for you!”
وَوَجْدَاًand in longing إذاwhen مِلْتُمْyou incline إليَّtoward me معَwith الهَوَىdesire
أقولُI say اعتذاراًby way of excuse يَحْسُنُis becoming الميلُswaying للقُضْبِfor the boughs
And in longing, when you incline toward me with desire,
I say in excuse: “Swaying befits the boughs.”
وَإِنْand if تُوقِدُواyou kindle نَارَthe fire of الحَرِيقِthe conflagration فَكَمْthen how often أَضَاshone (apparently shortened)
وَنَارُand the fire of فُؤادِيmy heart فِيin حَشَاthe breast of الْوَالِهِthe distraught one الصِّبِّthe ardent lover
And if you kindle the consuming fire, how often it has shone—
and my heart’s fire lies in the breast of the distraught, ardent lover.
وَإِنْand if تَجِدُواyou find بِالشِّعْبِin the ravine سَيْلاًa torrent وَلُجَةًand a deep pool
فَأَنْتُمْthen you are بِمَجْرَىin the channel of الدَّمْعِtears يَاO سَاكِنيdwellers in قَلْبِيmy heart
And if you find a torrent and a deep pool in the ravine,
then you are in the channel of tears, O dwellers in my heart.
سَبَتْنَاtook us captive الجُفُونُthe eyelids البَابِليَّاتُBabylonian مِنْكُمُof yours
وَإِنَّand surely لُبَانَاتِthe longings of الُّلَباءَةِunclear as written فِيin الحَبِّlove
Your Babylonian eyelids have taken us captive.
And surely the longings of [unclear word] lie in love—
نُصَيْصٌa little text (uncertain) فَهلاَّso why not لِلرَقِيبَfor the watcher وَعَاذِلٍand a reproacher
لِكَيْمَاso that يَبِيتَاboth might spend the night فِيin عَذَابٍtorment وَفِيand in نَصْبِweariness
a little text [reading uncertain]; why not for the watcher and a reproacher,
so that both might spend the night in torment and weariness?
غَزَالُكُمُyour gazelle ذَاكَthat المُمَنَّعُwithheld وَصْلُهُunion with him
أَبَاحَlaid open حِمىthe sanctuary of دَمْعِىmy tears وَبَالَغَand went to extremes فيin نَهْبىplundering me
That gazelle of yours, union with whom is withheld,
has laid open my tears’ sanctuary and gone far in plundering me.
هُوَhe الظَّبْىُthe gazelle لاَno بَلْrather صَائِدُhunter of الظَّبْيِthe gazelle لَحْظُهُhis glance
وَيَاand oh مَاhow أُحَيْلاَdelightfully sweet الصَّيْدَthe capture فيin شَرَكِthe snare of الهُدْبِeyelashes
He is the gazelle—no, rather, his glance is a hunter of gazelles.
And oh, how sweet is capture in the snare of eyelashes!
حَلاَgrew sweet لَحْظُهُhis glance وَالمُرُّand the bitter thing فِيin الحُبِّlove وَصْلُهُunion with him
وَلَمْand did not تَحْلُgrow sweet حَتَّىuntil مَرَّpassed فِيin رِيقِهِhis saliva العَذْبِsweet
His glance is sweet; what is bitter in love is union with him.
And it did not grow sweet until it passed through his sweet saliva.
عَلَىover عِطْفِهِhis graceful side حَتَّىeven مِنَof الوُرْقِthe gray doves غَيْرَتِيmy jealousy
أَلَمْhave you not تَرَهَاseen it هَاجَتْflared عَلَىover الغُصُنِthe branch الرَّطْبِtender
My jealousy over his graceful side extends even to the gray doves.
Have you not seen it flare over the tender branch?
فَإِنْand if ذَبَلَتْhave wilted أَجْفَانُهَاher eyelids وَهْيَthough they are نَرْجِسٌnarcissi
فَمِنْthen because of طُوْلِthe length of مَاwhat أَدْمَنْتُI have persisted in فِيهِنَّin them مِنْof شُرْبِdrinking
And if her eyelids have wilted, though they are narcissi,
it is from my long addiction to drinking from them.
وَمِنْand among عَجَبٍwonders وَهْىَand they are الكُؤُوُسُthe cups فَمَاthen what لَهَاis with them
إِذَاwhen كُسِّرَتْthey are broken صَحَّتْthey become sound وَدَارَتْand circulate عَلىamong الشَّربِthe drinkers
And how strange—they are cups—why is it
that, when broken, they grow whole and circulate among the drinkers?
فَهَلْthen is there عَوْدَةٌa return فِيin لَيْلَةٍa night مِنْmade of ذَوَابَةٍa tress
عَنِof البَدْرِthe full moon مِنْfrom ظَلْمَائِهَاits darkness دَائِماًalways تُنْبىtells
Is there, then, a return in a night made of a tress,
that, from its darkness, ever speaks of the full moon?
تَرَقَّىascended بِهَاthrough it قَلْبِيmy heart إلىto سِرِّthe secret of وَقْدِهِits burning
سَلاَمٌpeace علىupon مَنْthe one who تَحْتَهُbeneath him سُبَحُrosaries الرَّطْبِfresh dates
My heart ascended through it to the secret of its burning.
Peace upon the one beneath whom are rosaries of fresh dates.
أَرَادَhe wished تَوَلَّىhe took charge of الحَلَّloosing وَالعَقْدَand binding عِنْدَهُin his presence
فَجَارَthen he wronged عَلَىagainst المسَجْوُنِthe prisoner مَنْfrom مُقْتَضَىwhat is required by الجَذْبِattraction
He sought to take charge of loosing and binding in his presence;
then he wronged the prisoner, as attraction required.
دَعَانيِinvited me انْكِسَارُthe drooping of الجَفْنِthe eyelid مِنْهُof his لِضَمَّةٍto an embrace
فَجَاوَبَنِيthen he answered me مَاnothing لِلغُصُونِfor the boughs سِوَىexcept الهُضْبِthe hills
The drooping of his eyelid invited me to an embrace;
then he answered me: “Boughs have nothing but the hills.”
وَغَرَّدْتُand I cooed تَغْرِيدَthe cooing of الحَمَامِdoves تَوَصُّلاًseeking access
إليْهِto him لِمَاbecause of what بَيْنَbetween الحَمَائِمَthe doves وَالقُضْبِand the boughs
And I cooed as doves coo, seeking a way
to him, because of the bond between doves and boughs.
وَقُلْتُand I said زَكَاةُthe alms due on الحُسْنِbeauty فَرْضاًas an obligation فَقَالَthen he said مَاnot
تَمِيلُincline الغُصُونُthe boughs الوُرْقُleafy إلاَّexcept علىtoward النُّدْبِthe gallant
And I said, “Beauty’s alms are obligatory.” He said, “Never
do leafy boughs incline except toward the gallant.”
