دُمُوعِيmy tears أَبَتْrefused إِلاَّexcept انْسِكَاباًpouring forth لَعَلَّهَاperhaps they
بِمَكْنُونِto the secret of حُبِّيmy love عِنْدَbefore حِبِّيَmy beloved تَشْهَدُbear witness
My tears refused all but pouring forth; perhaps they
will bear witness before my beloved to my hidden love.
دَنَوْتُI drew near فَأَقْصَانِيthen he drove me away فَعْدْتُthen I returned فَرَدَّنِيthen he turned me back
فَلاَso neither هُوَhe يُدْنِينِيdraws me near وَلاَnor أَنَاI أَبْعُدُgo far away
I drew near, and he drove me away; I returned, and he turned me back.
So he does not draw me near, nor do I go away.
دُهِيتُI was stricken بِفُقْدانٍby loss لِمَنْof one whom قَدْalready وَجَدْتُهُI had found him
فَلاَso no مَدْمَعٌflow of tears يَرْقَاceases flowing وَلاَnor وَجْدُlove's anguish يُحْمَدُis praised
I was stricken by the loss of one I had found.
So no flow of tears abates, nor is love's anguish praised.
دَبِيبُcreeping الهَوىَlove بَيْنَbetween الضُّلُوعِthe ribs مُؤَجَّجٌset ablaze
لَهِيبُblaze اشْتيِاقيmy yearning فِيهwithin it لِلقْلَبِfor the heart مُورِدُleading to ruin
Love creeps, ablaze, between the ribs;
the blaze of my yearning within it leads the heart to ruin.
دَعَانِيleave me be, you two فَمَنْfor whoever ذَاقَtasted الهَوىَlove ثُمَّthen لَمْdid not يَنَلْattain
وِصَالَunion حَبِيبٍa beloved كَيْفَhow لاَnot يَتَنَهَّدُsigh
Leave me be—for whoever has tasted love, then failed to attain
union with a beloved—how can he not sigh?
دَعَاوىَclaims الأَسَىgrief عِنْديwith me عَلَيْكَagainst you صَحِيحَةٌvalid
فَقَلْبِيَfor my heart خَفَّاقٌthrobbing وَجَفْنِيand my eyelid مُسَهَّدُkept sleepless
My claims of grief against you are well-founded:
for my heart throbs, and my eyelid is kept sleepless.
دَمِيmy blood بِكَbecause of you مَسْفُوكٌshed وَدَمْعِيand my tears مُسَفَّحٌpoured forth
فَيَصْلُحُso it grows sound قَلْبِيmy heart فِيكَin you مِنْfrom حَيْثُwhere يَفْسَدُit falls to ruin
My blood is shed because of you, and my tears are poured forth;
so my heart, in loving you, is mended where it falls to ruin.
دَفَائِنُburied treasures حُبٍّlove فِيin لُحُودِtombs جَوَانِحِribs
لَهَاfor them بِكَthrough you حَشْرٌresurrection كُلَّevery يَوْمٍday وَمَوْعِدُand an appointed meeting
Buried treasures of love in the tombs of the ribs
have, through you, a resurrection each day and an appointed meeting.
دُجَايَmy darkness إِذَاwhen وَاصَلْتَyou grant union يَوْمٌday مُؤَبَّدٌeverlasting
وَيَوْمِيand my day إِذَاwhen أَبْعِدْتُI was driven away لَيْلُnight مُسَرْمَدُunending
My darkness, when you grant union, is an everlasting day;
and my day, when I am driven away, is an unending night.
دُنُوُّكَyour nearness أَقْصَىthe utmost مَاwhat أُحِبُّI love وَأَشْتَهِيand I desire
فَإِنْso if نِلْتُهُI attain it فَهْوَthen it is النَّعيِمُbliss المُخَلَّدُeverlasting
Your nearness is the utmost of what I love and desire;
so if I attain it, it is everlasting bliss.
