كَأَنَّas though عِذَارَdown along the cheek مَنْthe one whom أُحِبُّI love بِخَدِّهِon his cheek
رِضَاهُhis favor وفِيهِand in it بعْضُsome آثَارِtraces صَدِّهِhis rejection
It is as though the down on the cheek of the one I love
were his favor, bearing some traces of his rejection.

Graceful in his swaying, shooting darts with his eyelid, deadly;
the armies of love are beneath the banner of his intent.
يُكَلِّفُhe burdens رِدْفَيْهِhis buttocks مِنَof الثُّقْلِweight مِثْلَlike مَاwhat
يُكَلِّفُhe burdens مِنْwith ثُقْلِthe weight الهَوَىlove قَلْبَthe heart عَبْدِهِhis slave
He burdens his buttocks with as much weight as
he lays upon his slave's heart through the weight of love.

A pool ripples beneath the bough of his stature,
and the serpent of that hair thirsts to drink from it.
تَوَلَّىtook charge of قَضَايَاmatters الحَلِّloosening والعَقْدِand binding بَنْدُهُhis sash
فَضَاقَso it narrowed مَجَالُthe span الخُصْرِthe waist مِنْfrom عَقْدِthe knotting بَنْدِهِhis sash
His sash took charge of matters of loosening and binding,
so his waist's span narrowed with the knotting of his sash.
فَإِنْfor if كَانَis مِنْfrom خَدَّيْهِhis two cheeks نَارٌa fire دُخَانُهَاits smoke
بِصُدْغَيْهِat his two temples فالجَنَّاتُthen the gardens مِنْfrom تَحْتِbeneath بُرْدِهِhis cloak
For if from his cheeks comes a fire whose smoke
is at his temples, then the gardens lie beneath his cloak.
فَلاso do not تَلْتَمِسseek إنْجَازَfulfillment مَوْعِدِthe promise جَفْنِهِhis eyelid
فَفِيهِfor in it فُتُورٌlanguor فَالْتَمِسْso seek خُلْفَthe breaking وَعْدِهِhis promise
So do not seek fulfillment of his eyelid's promise;
for it is languid, so seek the breaking of his promise.
فَإِنْfor if كَانَis يَهْوَىَhe loves الخُلْفَbreaking one's word أَفْدِيهِI would ransom him مَالهُwhat ails him?
يُوَافِقُhe agrees فيin قَتْلِkilling المُحِبِّthe lover بِجَهْدِهِwith his effort
For if he loves breaking his word—I would ransom him!—why does he
agree to kill the lover with all his might?
فَخَرْتُI boasted بِحُسْنِof the beauty النَّظْمِverse فيهِabout him فقالَso he said ليto me
تَعَلَّمْتَهُyou learned it مِنْfrom نَظْمِthe stringing ثَغْرِيmy mouth وَعِقْدِهِand its necklace
I boasted of the beauty of my verse about him, and he said to me:
"You learned it from the stringing of my teeth and their necklace."
وَلَمَّاand when رَأَىhe saw دَمْعِيmy tears دَماًblood ظَنَّhe thought خَدَّهُhis cheek
تَرَائَىhad appeared لدمْعِيto my tears فَاكْتَسَىso it took on لَوْنَthe color وَرْدِهِits rose
And when he saw that my tears were blood, he thought his cheek
had appeared to my tears, which then took on its rose's hue.
وَلَوْand if أَنَّthat قَلْبِيmy heart حَازَhad acquired قَسْوَةَthe hardness قَلْبِهِhis heart
سَلَوْتُI would have forgotten ولكنْand yet حَازَit acquired رقُّةَthe tenderness خَدِّهِhis cheek
And if my heart had acquired his heart's hardness,
I would have forgotten him, but it acquired his cheek's tenderness.
وقَدَّمْتُand I offered دَمْعِيmy tears رَشْوَةًas a bribe وَهْوَand it was لُؤْلؤٌpearls
فَمَاyet not جَادَhe gave generously لِيto me ياoh لَيْتَif only جَادَhe gave generously بِرَدِّهِby returning it
And I offered my tears as a bribe—they were pearls—
yet he gave me nothing; if only he had given them back!
أَأَحْبَابَنَاO our beloveds أَنْتُمْyou all لَنَاfor us القَصْدُthe aim والمُنَىand the wishes
أَيَرْغَبُwould he turn away? صَبٌّa lovesick lover عَنْfrom مُنَاهُhis wishes وَقَصْدِهِand his aim
O our beloveds, you are our aim and our wishes;
would a lovesick lover turn away from his wishes and his aim?
حَلَلْتُمْyou all settled مِنَof القَصْرَيْنِthe two palaces قَلْبِيmy heart وَنَاظِرِيand my eye
وَمَاand how أَحْكَمَfirmly rules المَوْلَىthe master عَلىover مِلْكِthe property عَبْدِهِhis slave
You have settled in the two palaces, my heart and my eye;
and how firmly the master rules over his slave's property!
فَإِنْfor if قُلْتُمyou all say ماnot الشَّامُSyria مِصْرٌEgypt فَذُوthen one with الصَّفاpurity
يَرَىsees القُرْبَnearness فيin التَّوْحِيدoneness منfrom غَيْرِother than بُعْدِهِhis distance
For if you say, "Syria is not Egypt," then one of pure heart
sees nearness in oneness, with no distance from him.
