لاَdo not تَطْمَعَنَّhope (emphatic) فَمَاfor ... not سَلُوُّforgetting love فُؤَادِهِhis heart
لاَ تَطْمَعَنَّ فَمَا سَلُوُّ فُؤَادِهِ
فِيwithin وُسْعِscope طَاقَتِهِhis power وَلاَnor اسْتِعْدَادِهhis capacity
فِي وُسْعِ طَاقَتِهِ وَلاَ اسْتِعْدَادِه
Do not hope, for his heart's forgetting love
Is neither within his power nor within his capacity.
هَيْهَاتَfar from possible أَنْthat يُصْغِيheeds إِلىto غَيْرِother than الهَوىlove
هَيْهَاتَ أَنْ يُصْغِي إِلى غَيْرِ الهَوى
قَلْبُheart المُحِبِّof the lover فَإِنْso if شَكَكْتَyou doubt فَنَادِهِthen call to him
قَلْبُ المُحِبِّ فَإِنْ شَكَكْتَ فَنَادِهِ
Far from heeding anything but love
Is the lover's heart; if you doubt, then call to him.
أَعْطَىhe gave هَوَىlove for لَيْلَىجَميعَLayla; all رُسُومِهِhis traces
أَعْطَى هَوَى لَيْلَىجَميعَ رُسُومِهِ
إِلاَّexcept مُنَيْزِلَةَlittle abode الَّذِيthe one who بِفُؤَادِهِin his heart
إِلاَّ مُنَيْزِلَةَ الَّذِي بِفُؤَادِهِ
He gave love for Layla every trace of himself,
Save the little abode of the one within his heart.
لَوْif كُنْتُI were أَمْلِكُI possess وَصْلَهُunion with him عَانَقْتُهُI would embrace him
لَوْ كُنْتُ أَمْلِكُ وَصْلَهُ عَانَقْتُهُ
حَتَّىuntil أَرَىI see التَّوْحِيدَoneness فِيin تَعْدَادِهِhis multiplicity
حَتَّى أَرَى التَّوْحِيدَ فِي تَعْدَادِهِ
If union with him were in my power, I would embrace him,
Until I saw oneness in his multiplicity.
لَكِنَّنِيbut I مَاnot رمْتُI sought أَشْهَدُto behold حُسْنَهُhis beauty
لَكِنَّنِي مَا رمْتُ أَشْهَدُ حُسْنَهُ
إِلاَّexcept that فَنِيتُI was annihilated فَغِبْتُand so I became absent عَنْfrom إِشْهَادِهِhis granting of vision
إِلاَّ فَنِيتُ فَغِبْتُ عَنْ إِشْهَادِهِ
But never did I seek to behold his beauty
Without being annihilated and losing awareness of the vision he granted.
