بِاللهِby God بَلِّغْconvey سَلاَمِيmy greeting أَيُّهَاO الحَادِيthe camel-driver
إِلىَto غَزَالِgazelle الصَّرِيمِthe sandy tract الرَّائِحِgoing at dusk الغَادِيgoing at dawn
By God, convey my greeting, O camel-driver,
To the gazelle of the sandy tract, roaming at dusk and dawn.
وَقُلْand say لَهُto him لِيfor me عَلىupon مَغْنَاكَyour dwelling حَقُّa claim هَوَىًlove
لأَنَّbecause دَمْعِيَmy tears رَوَّىَwatered رَبْعَهُhis abode الصَّادِيthirsty
And tell him: I have a lover's claim upon your dwelling,
For my tears have watered his thirsty abode.
وَقَفْتُI stood مِمَّاbecause of what جَرَىbefell لِيto me فِيin مَعَاهِدِهِhis familiar haunts
أَبْكِيI weep إِلىَuntil أَنْthat جَرَىَflowed مِنْfrom دَمْعِيَmy tears الوَادِيthe valley
Because of what befell me, I stood in his familiar haunts,
Weeping until the valley flowed with my tears.
وَلَمْand did not أُنَادِI call out سِوَىexcept بِاسْمِby the name of التِيshe who سَفَرَتْunveiled her face
لَيْلاًat night فَأَشْرَقَand so shone مِنْfrom أَنْوارِهَاher radiance النَّادِيthe gathering-place
And I called out only the name of her who unveiled her face
At night, and the gathering-place shone with her radiance.
خُذْtake يَاO نَسِيُمbreeze بَقَايَاremains المَيْتِthe dead man فَاسْرِthen travel by night بِهِwith him
لِلْحِيِّto the living one تَجْمَعُyou unite أَرْوَاحاًsouls بِأَجْسَادِwith bodies
Take, O breeze, the dead man's remains, and carry him by night
To the living one, uniting souls with bodies.
وَالثُمْand kiss ظُهُورَsurfaces الثَّرىَthe earth مِنْfrom حَيْثُwhere مَاever خَطَرَتْshe walked gracefully
بِهِover it سُعَادُSuad إِذَاif حَاوَلْتَyou seek إِسْعَادِيto gladden me
And kiss the earth's surface wherever she has glided—
Suad—if you seek to gladden me.
مَاnot أَعْشِقُI love passionately الغُصْنَthe bough مَيَّاساًswaying gracefully مَعَاطِفُهُits curves
إِلاَّexcept لِقَادمَةِfor the approach of قَدٍّa figure مِنْهُof his مَيَّادِswaying
I do not love the bough with its swaying curves
Except for the approach of his swaying figure.
وَلاَand not أَرَىI deem البَرْقَlightning أَهْلاًworthy أَنْto أُلاحِظُهُI glance at it
إِلاَّexcept لِمَاfor what مِنْهُof it يَحْكِيmirrors ثَغْرَهُhis mouth البَادِيrevealed
Nor do I deem lightning worthy of my glance,
Except for the way it mirrors his mouth when revealed.
