You may be unjust, if you wish, and do wrong,

Or turn the world into a place of mourning through your desertion.

You may falsify the whole history of love,

From the day love was born and sang.

Or deny the longings, or claim

Falsely that you were not in love with me.

Or return—and you will not return—surrendering

Your heart’s banners to the one who came to you in surrender.

Woe is me—my tongue almost said it:

“I have forgiven”—yet I have not forgiven... but rather...!
