I beguiled your apparition, and it turned into a mirage.

I glimpsed your phantom, so it turned into a mirage

Who taught apparitions to doubt?!

Who taught specters to doubt?

وهتفتُ باسمك فاستدار ليَ الصدى

مستأنسًا .. صمتَ الفراغ .. جوابا

And I called out your name; the echo turned toward me,

And I called your name, so the echo turned to me

finding solace in the void’s silence as an answer.

Making itself at home... the silence of space, an answer

وهرعتُ عَلّي .. إنّما ارتاع  المدى

من أجفلَ الأمداء .. والأبوابا ؟!

And I rushed, hoping I might ... only for the expanse to take fright.

And I rushed at you, but the horizon shrunk away, startled

Who startled the expanses—and the doors?!

By the most desolate of wastelands... and doors!

عيناكَ ملهمتايَ .. كيف تجمهرت

تِيهًا  ..  وزادت بالدّلال  .. عذابا

Your eyes are my two muses—how did they throng

Your eyes inspired me... how they swarmed, confused,

in haughty pride, and with coyness increase torment?

Wandering... and with coquetry... increased my torment

الكونُ دونك ..  فاتّخذ لي مسلكاً

نحو المقامِ ..  وهيّئ  الأسبابا

The universe falls short of you—so choose a path for me,

toward the station, and prepare the means.

Or cast aside what you thought was love,

Or undo what you thought to be mere fancy

which destroyed a heart grown gray in loving you.

That ruined a heart... young with love for you
