Jerusalem is in danger?! Woe is me! And I am frightened

by prolonged complaint, prolonged reproach, and clamor.

For people, amid the haunts of diversion, are struck down

by their passions, the wishful dreams of helplessness, and desires.

Wherever you turn, there are numbing melodies,

and rapture, and nights stirred by musical delight.

    يَلقُّهمْ مِنْ دياجيرِ الهوى حُجُبُ

    And the people slumber—in bewilderment, in darkness;

veils from the deep darkness of passion buffet them.

    Storms born of disarray descend

upon them, and the whirlwind's fury draws near.

They split into scattered factions; around them swirl

bitter conflict, the horror of evil, and devastation.

The enemy tossed crumbs, and they sprang forward in factions,

vying for them, distracted by a false passion.

Why do I blame my enemy whenever

defeats befall me or calamities descend upon us?

We are to blame! We bear God's covenant,

yet resolve and the means to act have deserted us.

Jerusalem is in danger?! Now?! How astonishing!

Where are the years through which afflictions passed?!

Where are the admonitions that thundered in our ears?

Where is the warner, and where are the verses and the books?!

Where are the calamities that shook every deaf person,

yet stirred neither our resolve nor our swords?!

And the people's scheme has long advanced among us,

while motives for deceit and suspicion persist.

And we press on with our dreams, in weakness,

yielding ground, stumbling along paths of bewilderment.

A sequence! How often we have descended a slope within it

that plunges us down! Within it, resolve and striving grow cheap.

Our slogans thundered! Our throats grew hoarse!

Our emotions ran wild, rising and blazing!

Our complaint clamored in every arena,

folded away with defeat, then disappearing—

addressed to a body in whose arena nations were torn apart.

How vile what they have done and perpetrated on earth!

We have indeed relied on the oppressors' plotting, and we

still suffer under their plotting and are overturned.

We did not complain to God! We did not seek refuge in His mercy,

so no purpose stayed true to the path of guidance.

God gave you that through which hope may be cherished,

and that which strengthens goodness and steadfast toil.

These millions have been scattered over the earth,

    and an abundance of the earth's treasures, and gold;

and a central, interconnected position on earth—

the rope of religion and its bond unite all this.

Yet they exchanged God's bounty for what was tossed

by the hands of an enemy whose generosity is ruin.

And they altered the covenant! Woe is me! Nothing remained to them

but slogans around which factions clamored.

So they became assorted, splintered sects,

and their arena, in enemy hands, is plundered.

truly, and frightened by the strangeness of our affairs.

leaping in a flash toward the highest heavens.

as rich musk, and a perfume not brought from elsewhere.
