I am Al-Aqsa Mosque! And these grounds

Are remnants, remembrance, sorrow, and calamities!

I was indeed a trust among the believers,

Through the ages, as long as they rallied and hastened to me.

They enfolded me with their bodies and eyes,

And keen-edged swords of theirs guarded me.

Advancing hosts, their bonds unbroken through the days,

So the grounds shook at the resolve of those hosts.

    تجودُ قُلوبٌ بالوفا وأضالعُ

    When the people lacked weapons, they sprang forward;

Hearts and ribs lavished their loyalty.

And a covenant with God Most High was bound fast

By certainty that a person returns to God,

And that the gardens of eternity are beheld through truth,

And with blood a battlefield and battles are laid bare.

Processions of light, whose march filled the ages,

So deep darkness and dawn-horizons shone through them.

And they spread their Lord's message throughout the world,

So ears in East and West listened to it.

And they scattered dewdrops and poured down torrential rain,

So withered grounds and barren wastes turned green.

So what ails my people today, that they have vanished and been made to vanish?

And no vanguards of theirs remain on the horizons.

And what ails my people, that they have exchanged the field of battle,

So their battlefields and factories have vanished?

And what ails them, that they have strayed from the path—woe to them!

So their whims and greed have swept them to and fro.

So a call has vanished—how noble its bounty!

Gatherings used to echo it on every horizon.

And the fields of martyrdom were their arena,

So now their grazing grounds fill the lands.

And every day a festival features me,

And tearful eyes lament me amid the poetry.

And the believers' blood was rich,

Poured out while the souls of witnesses fought in defense.

So I have become—alas for me—the talk of a gathering,

And tears of a weeper whom beds hold.

And once a round of fighting thundered across the battlefields,

Now a widely heard voice thunders with slogans.

And how often I hoped their tears would become

Blood, with whose richness the barren wastes are watered!

Do my own people slaughter me, then weep

Over me? Such deeds are truly vile!

How many a merchant has offered my flesh as merchandise,

And such wares have grown scarce in the markets.

So this one hawks his trade openly,

And that one is hidden by a deceitful slogan.

So they all sank into the mire and were made to vanish

In a wilderness, while fatal downfalls unfolded amid it all.

For I am not just a ring of walls and a courtyard,

But I am a rich and vast horizon.

The revelation of a message extends my horizons,

And a strong cord binds the dwellings together.

Gardens from which fragrance wafts, enriching

With fragrance the courtyards and grounds within them.

For my heartbeat comes from Mecca, Islam's heart,

And from Taybah comes revelation urging toward truth.

And from every land, a pulpit and minarets,

Houses resounding with the call—congregational mosques.

Hearts with the beat of life, and ribs

That surge, and hopes that seethe, and trusts.

My veins remain rich with life

When sacred laws are linked across the lands.

And what life can be hoped for without that,

If greed tears me from my own ribs?

And a crier called: 'A crust here is enough for us,'

And another called: 'We hope, and we curry favor.'

And all the defeats swept across the world:

A thundering slogan, or one humbled and one pleading.

Today a criminal's grip tightens upon me,

And his cunning and fingers carry me off.

And every day—woe to my soul—there are theaters

Being run, with passions contending upon them.

The threads of cunning are worked behind their curtain,

And gleaming hopes are proclaimed upon them.

And my sorrow and abasement are folded away in disgrace

By a thundering slogan or splendid wishes.

My limbs are torn apart, and my heart is wrenched out,

And victory is sought while souls are submissive.

They say 'Liberation,' yet strike a bargain

With witnesses guaranteeing it, and a seller.

    They say 'Self-determination'! Yet it

Is truly the destruction of hopes: one gives, another withholds.

A wolf and a fox negotiate with the sheep over it,

And events have paved the way through the years.

They say: 'The people of the land know its condition best.'

And where are they? Truly, I plead to God.

And my people! My people are none but a nation with

God-given resolve that unites them on the battlefields,

And a rank binding all the believers together,

As though they were a lofty, impregnable edifice.

If the nation of Ahmad does not rise on earth,

Then everything hoped for in the arena is lost.

Have mercy, O Al-Aqsa! Have mercy whenever

You cross my mind and longings draw me toward you.
