    My night has grown long as I watch for the light,

    I await the dawn, keen-eyed for morning.

    After Layla struck camp and then departed,

    She did not turn aside, nor hire a leader.

    My patience flew away; my patience was not to blame,

    When it saw the curtained litters on the camels.

    قَد تُواتيكَ أو تَجيءَ يَسيرا

    She promised me and held out hopes of eternity with her;

    She may favor you, or come only briefly.

    And if union comes your way only

    Grudgingly, or scant and betrayed,

    Or like an overdrawn well's water after replenishment,

    Its tear-flow checked, scant, never returning,

    وصَغيرُ الأُمورِ يَجني الكَبيرا

    The union you seek from me has grown distant;

    And little matters bring forth great ones.

    I remember us and our people at Hafir,

    Reckoning time and the years as months.

    So we felt secure, and that deceived us, until

    Time alarmed us, coming upon us as a raider.

    Time has a fierce onslaught: beware of it.

    Never spend the night believing yourself safe from the ages.

    A young man may fall asleep healthy, then perish,

    Though he had gone to bed secure and happy.

    Time is gentle, yet it butts fiercely,

    Leaving bone weakened and broken.

    So ask the people: where is the house of Qubays?

    Before them, Time crushed Sabur.

    Death snatched him away, and he fell,

    While even then he hoped for long life.

    تَرهَبُ الأُسدُ صَولَهُ والزَّئيرا

    Indeed, he had troops and a crown;

    Lions feared his charge and roar.

    And the noble sons of al-Asfar, the kings

    Of the Romans—not one of them remains remembered.

    إنَّما الهُلكُ أن تَزُورَ القُبورا

    So call your soul to its right course before perishing;

    Perishing is nothing but a visit to the graves.

    وتَذَكَّر وحادِثِ التَّذكيرا

    Do not sleep your whole day away in ignorance;

    Remember, and keep remembrance fresh.

    And earn your soul a plea of innocence,

    And a safe-conduct that makes hardship easy.

    O you who seek a path to deliverance,

    Instill righteousness as an inward thought within your heart.

    Indeed, one of your two days is near today; know

    Which of your two days—of the two, of the two—is to come round.

    نَغَّصَ الَموتُ ذا الغنَى والفَقيرا

    I do not see death outrunning death at all;

    Death has embittered the wealthy and the poor.

    It overtakes the complacent wild beast, and strikes down

    The birds on the mountain peak, choosing far-off nests.

    Where, where is escape from what is coming?

    I see no bird saved by taking wing.

    O heedless sleeper, open your eyes,

    Lest you be the misled, deluded one.

    And restrain your soul from its desires, taking care

    Lest you be forestalled and overtaken.

    Where are our fathers, while we keep hoping

    For immortality after our fathers, in delusion?

    كُلَّ يَومٍ نَرَى لَهُنَّ عَقيرا

    And deaths go forth at evening as at dawn;

    Each day we see a victim struck down by them.

    How many a healthy man you see walking today

    Lies buried tomorrow, the filling of a shroud!

    And many a fallen man, smeared with blood,

    Whom war's spears have given as carrion to vultures.

    War charged fiercely and stuffed him with

    A broad blade, wavy-marked and sharpened.

    So walk with moderation when you walk, and see clearly:

    In moderation lie a clear road and bridges.

    In moderation there is good for the son of Adam,

    And a path easy for the weak.
