وَيحَalas for أمِّthe mother of (an exclamatory expression) دارٍa dwelling حَلَلناwe lodged بِهاin it
وَيحَ أمِّ دارٍ حَلَلنا بِها
بَينَbetween الثَّوِيَّةِal-Thawiyya والمَردَمَهand al-Mardama
بَينَ الثَّوِيَّةِ والمَردَمَه
Alas for the dwelling where we lodged,
between al-Thawiyya and al-Mardama:
بَرِّيَّةٌa desert place غُرِسَتwas planted فيin السَّوادِthe Sawad (cultivated land)
بَرِّيَّةٌ غُرِسَت في السَّوادِ
غَرسَlike the planting of الَمضِيغَةٍthe muscle فيin اللَّهزَمَهthe hinge of the jaw
غَرسَ الَمضِيغَةٍ في اللَّهزَمَه
a desert place planted in the Sawad,
as a muscle is set at the hinge of the jaw.
لِسَانٌa tongue لِعُربَةَof ʿUrba ذُوpossessing وَلغَةٍa lisp
لِسَانٌ لِعُربَةَ ذُو وَلغَةٍ
تَوَلَّعَbecame infatuated فيin الرِّيفِthe countryside بِالهَندَمَهwith foreign chatter
تَوَلَّعَ في الرِّيفِ بِالهَندَمَه
A tongue of ʿUrba, marked by a lisp,
became infatuated, in the countryside, with foreign chatter.
