بَانَhas departed الشَّبابُyouth فماso there is no لَهُfor it مَردُودُreturn
وَعلَيَّand upon me مِنof سِمةthe mark الكَبيرِthe aged man شُهودُwitnesses
Youth has departed, and there is no bringing it back.
And I bear signs that testify to old age:
شَيبٌgray hair بِرَأسيon my head واضِحvisible أُعقبتُهُI was given it in succession
مِنfrom بَعدِafter آخَرَanother بَانَdeparted وَهوَwhile it was حَميدُpraiseworthy
Visible gray hair upon my head, which I received
After another had departed, still esteemed.
وأَرَىand I see سَوادَblackness الرَّاسِthe head يَنقُصُهُdiminishes it الِبلَىdecay
والشَّيبُand gray hair عَنbecause of طُولِthe length الَحياةِlife يَزيدُincreases
And I see decay diminish the blackness of my hair,
And gray hair increases as life lengthens.
ولَقَدand indeed بَكيتُI wept عَلَىfor الشَّبابِyouth لَوif أَنَّهُthat it
كانَwas البُكاءُweeping بهِwith it عَلَيَّto me يعُودُreturns
And I would indeed have wept for youth, if
Weeping could have brought it back to me.
لَيسَis not الشَّبابُyouth وإنeven if جَزِعتَyou grieve بِراجِعٍreturning
أَبداًever ولَيسَand there is no لَهُfor it عَلَيكَto you مُعيدُone who restores it
Youth will not return, even if you grieve,
Ever; nor is there anyone to bring it back to you.
