O wealthy man, borne along in ease!
Have you not heard of the calamity of those of old?

One day at al-Baqqah, he summoned the princes—
Jadhīmah, when he conferred with them in groups.
فلَمso he did not يَرَsee غَيرَanything other than ماwhat أئتَمَرُواthey agreed upon سِواهُbesides it
وشَدَّand tightened لِرَحلِهِfor his saddle السّفرthe travelers الوضيناthe plaited girth
He saw no alternative to what they had agreed upon,
And the travelers tightened the girth for his saddle.
فَطَاوَعَso he obeyed أَمرَهُمtheir counsel وعَصَىand he disobeyed قَصيراًQaṣīr
وكانَand he was يَقولُsaying لَوif only تَبَعَhe had followed اليَقيناcertainty
So he obeyed their counsel and disobeyed Qaṣīr,
And he would say: if only he had followed what was certain

وهُنَّand they ذَواتُpossessors of غائِلَةٍdeadly guile لُحيناmay they be cursed
Concerning his intended bride, who betrayed and broke faith!
And they harbor deadly guile—may they be cursed!

And she insinuated in her letter to him
That he might possess her in marriage, and she submit to him.
فأَردَتهُso she destroyed him ورَغبُand the greed of النَّفسِthe soul يُرديdestroys
ويُبديand reveals لِلفَتَىto the young man الَحينَdoom المُبيناunmistakable
So she brought him to ruin; the soul's greed brings ruin,
And shows a man his unmistakable doom.
وخَبَّرتِand reported العَصَاal-ʿAṣā (the mare) الأَنباءَthe news عَنهُof him

And al-ʿAṣā brought tidings of him,
And I have never seen a baseborn man like her rider.
فَفَاجَأَهَاthen he suddenly encountered her وقَدand already جَمَعَتshe gathered جُموعاًhosts

Then he came suddenly upon her, when she had mustered hosts
At the gates of a fortress, with swords drawn.
وقَدَّمَتِand she set out الأَديمَthe leather hide لِراهِشَيِهfor his two forearm veins
وأَلفَىand he found قَولَهاher statement كَذِباًlies ومَيناand falsehood
And she laid out the hide for the veins of his forearms,
And he found her words lies and falsehood.
ومِنand out of حَذَرِfear of الُملاَوِمِreproaches والمَخازيand disgraces

And for fear of reproaches and disgraces—
And they bring shame upon those they befall—
أَطَفَّbrought close لأَنِفِهِto his nose الُموسَىthe razor قَصيرٌQaṣīr
لِيَجدَعَهُto cut it off وكانَand he had been بهِof it ضَنيناjealously protective
Qaṣīr brought the razor close to his nose
To cut it off, though he had cherished it.
فَأَهواهُthen he brought it down لِمَارنِهtoward his soft nose-tip فَأَضحَىand so he became

Then he brought it down upon his nose-tip, and became,
In pursuit of vengeance, noseless and disfigured.

And she encountered a man, never fearing
His deadly wiles; her trusted man was not trustworthy.
فلَمَّاthen when ارتَدَّhe returned منهُfrom him ارتَدَّhe returned صُلباًresolute
يَجُرُّhe drags along المالَthe wealth والصَّدرَand the breast الضَّغيناfull of rancor
Then, when he returned from him, he returned firm of purpose,
Dragging wealth along, and a breast full of rancor.
أَتَتهَاthey came to her العِيسُthe pale camels تَحِملُcarrying ماwhat دَهَاهَاundid her

وقِنعٌand he concealed (reading uncertain) فيin المُسُوحِhaircloth الدَّارِعيناthe armored men
The pale camels came to her, bearing what brought her ruin,
And he concealed the armored men in haircloth.
ودَسَّand he secretly sent لَهَاto her عَلَىover الأَنقَاءِthe sand-dunes عَمراًʿAmr
بِشِكَّتِهwith his battle gear وماand not خَشِيَتshe feared كَميناan ambush
And he secretly sent ʿAmr against her over the sand-dunes,
In his battle gear; she feared no ambush.
فَجَلَّلَهاthen he struck her قَديمَancient الأَثرِin its markings عَضباًa keen sword

Then he struck her with a keen blade bearing ancient marks,
Making it ring against her brows and forehead.
فأَضحَتthen she became مشنunclear; probably 'from' خَزائِنِهاher treasuries كأَنas though لَمnot
تَكُنbe زَبَّاءُZabbāʾ حامِلَةًcarrying جَنيناa fetus
Then, [apparently from] her treasuries, she became as though
Zabbāʾ had never carried a child in her womb.
وأَبرَزَهاand exposed her الَحوادِثُthe calamities والَمناياand deaths
وأَيُّand which مُعَمِّرٍlong-lived person لاnot يَبتَليناthey put to the test
And calamities and death laid her bare;
And what long-lived man do they not put to the test?
إذاif أَمهَلنَthey grant respite ذاone possessed of جَدٍّfortune عَظيمٍgreat
عَطَفنَthey turn back لَهُtoward him وَلوand even if فيin طَيِّthe folds of حِيناa span of time
If they give respite to one of mighty fortune,
They turn upon him again, even in the folds of time.
أَلَمhave you not تَرَseen أنَّthat ريبَthe calamities of الدَّهِرTime يَعلُوoverpower

Have you not seen that Time's calamities overcome
The man of valor and the well-fortified stronghold?

And I have not found a man taking delight in anything,
Even if he grew wealthy, and even if he begot sons.
