    إنَّ مَن تَهوَينَ قَد حارا

    O Lubayna, kindle the fire;

    indeed, the one you love has grown bewildered.

    تَقضِمُ الهِندِيَّ والغارا

    Many a fire I spent the night watching,

    gnawing Indian wood and laurel;

    عاقِدٌ في الخَصرِ زِنَّارا

    beside it, a gazelle stokes the fire,

    with a girdle tied about his waist;

    a young gazelle, his eyes dark against brilliant whites,

    and you would take his face for a gold dinar.

    Convey to the young men a message:

    sincere counsel from me, and tidings.

    As a youth, I sought out life's trials,

    and found life to have many phases.

    No one lives a life

    without encountering privation in it,

    from a friend or a trusted brother,

    or an enemy whose dwelling is far away,

    or calamities that keep besetting him,

    so familiarity turns to estrangement.
