رُبَّmany a مأمولٍone in whom hope is placed وراجٍand one hoping أَمَلاًa hope
قَدindeed ثَناهُturned him away الدَّهرُTime عَنfrom ذاكَthat الأَمَلthe hope
Many a man looked to with hope, and many a man cherishing hope,
Time has turned him away from that hope.
وفَتىًand a young man مِنfrom دَولَةٍa turn of good fortune مُعجِبَةٍsplendid
سُلِبَتwas stripped away عَنهُfrom him وللدَّهرِand Time has دُوَلturns of fortune
And many a youth enjoying splendid fortune
has had it stripped from him—for Time has its turns.
كيفَhow يَرجُوhopes الَمرءُthe human being قُوتاًfood للرَّدَىfor death
وَهيَwhile it is فيin الأَسبابِthe cords رَهنٌa hostage مُختَبَلheld captive
How can a man hope, being food for death,
while [his soul] lies hostage, held captive in the cords?
كُلَّمَاwhenever خَلَّفَleft behind يَوماًa day فَمَضَىand it passed
زادَهُincreased his ذَلِكَthat قُرباًnearness لِلأَجَلto the appointed end
Whenever he leaves a day behind and it passes,
that brings him nearer to his appointed end.
فَوَّقَnocked الدَّهرُTime إليناtoward us نَبلَهُits arrows
عَلَلاًa second draught يَقصِدُناit targets us بَعدَafter نَهَلa first draught
Time has nocked its arrows toward us;
for a second draught, it targets us after the first.
فَهوَso it يَرميناshoots at us فلاand so not نُبصِرُهُwe see it
فِعلَin the manner of رامٍan archer رامَsought صَيداًgame فَخَتَلthen stalked by stealth
It shoots at us, and we do not see it,
like an archer who sought game and stalked it by stealth.
رُزِقَwas granted الصَّيدَthe prey وَلاَقَىand encountered غِرَّةًheedlessness
فَرَمَىso he shot مُستَمكناًin full control ثُمَّthen قَتَلkilled
He was granted the prey and found it off guard,
so he shot with it in his power, then killed.
فَلِذاكَso for that reason الدَّهرُTime مَأمورقunclear form; apparently 'charged' بِناwith us
فَهوَso it لاnot يَغفَلُis heedless إنeven if شَيءٌsomething غَفَلwas heedless
Thus Time is [apparently] charged with us;
it is never heedless, even if something else is.
