تَأَيَّيتُI considered carefully مِنهُنَّamong them المصيرَthe choice فَلمand I did not أَزَلcease
أُيَسِّرُI prepare طِرفاًa noble horse ساهِمَlean الوَجهِof face فارِعاtall
I carefully chose among them, and never ceased
preparing a tall, noble horse with a lean face.
تَرَبَّيتُهُI raised him لَمI did not أَلهَneglect عَنhis ثَغَباتِهِneeds
فَتُبِصرُهُand sees him عَينٌan eye إذاwhen شيرَhe is displayed ضائِعاforlorn
I raised him, never neglecting his needs.
An eye would see him, when displayed, looking forlorn.
فذلّقتُهُand I trained him حتىuntil ترفَعgrew firm لحمَهَhis flesh
اداويهِI tend him مكنوناunder cover واركبand I ride وادِعاat ease
I trained him until his flesh grew firm,
tending him under cover and riding at ease.
فصَافَand he spent the summer يُفَرِّيtearing جُلَّهُhis covering عَنfrom سَراتِهِhis back
يَبُذُّhe outstrips الِجيادَthe fine horses فارِهاًvigorous مُتَتايِعاrushing headlong
He spent the summer tearing the covering from his back,
outstripping fine horses, vigorous and impetuous.
فآضَand he became كَصَدرlike the forepart of الرُّمحِthe spear نَهداًhigh-built مُصَدَّراًbroad-chested
يُكَفكِفُhe checks مِنهُin him خُنزُواناًproud defiance مُنازِعاstruggling
He became like the forepart of a spear, high-built and broad-chested,
holding his unruly pride in check.
