فصَادَفَناand he encountered us فيin الصُّبحِthe morning عِلجٌa burly fellow مُصَرَّدٌchilled
فصَادَفَنا في الصُّبحِ عِلجٌ مُصَرَّدٌ
إذاwhen ماindeed غَداhe went out يَخَالُهُwould imagine him الغِرُّthe inexperienced person صادِعاa cleaver
إذا ما غَدا يَخَالُهُ الغِرُّ صادِعا
At dawn we came upon a burly fellow, chilled to the bone.
When he set out, an inexperienced onlooker would take him for a cleaver.
يُطيفُhe circles بِسِتٍّaround six كالقِسِيِّlike bows قَوارِبٍapproaching
يُطيفُ بِسِتٍّ كالقِسِيِّ قَوارِبٍ
فأَيأَسَand he made despair إذwhen أَدبَرنَthey turned away مَنwhoever كانَwas طامِعاhopeful
فأَيأَسَ إذ أَدبَرنَ مَن كانَ طامِعا
He circled six approaching creatures, curved like bows.
When they turned away, he dashed the hopes of whoever had coveted them.
مُضَمِّمَdrawn close together أَطرافِthe extremities of العِظامِthe bones مُحَنِّباًbow-legged
مُضَمِّمَ أَطرافِ العِظامِ مُحَنِّباً
يُهَزهِزُhe shakes غُصناًa branch ذاwith ذَوائِبَtrailing tassels مائِعاsupple
يُهَزهِزُ غُصناً ذا ذَوائِبَ مائِعا
His bony limbs drawn close together, his legs bowed,
he shook a supple branch with trailing tassels.
أَحَالَhe thrust عَلَيهِat him بِالقَنَاةِwith the spear غُلامُناour young man
أَحَالَ عَلَيهِ بِالقَنَاةِ غُلامُنا
فَأَذرِعand how far-reaching بِهhe was with it لِخَلَّةِfor the need of الشَّاةِthe sheep راقِعاpatching
فَأَذرِع بِه لِخَلَّةِ الشَّاةِ راقِعا
Our young man thrust at him with a spear.
How far he reached with it, patching the sheep’s need!
