ومَجُودٍand a rain-watered meadow قَدalready اسجَهَرَّhas become radiant تَنَاوِيblossoms (continued)
ومَجُودٍ قَد اسجَهَرَّ تَنَاوِي
رَcompletion of 'blossoms' كَلونِlike the color of العُهونِdyed wool فيin الأَعلاقِthe hanging ornaments
رَ كَلونِ العُهونِ في الأَعلاقِ
And a rain-watered meadow, radiant with blossoms,
like the color of dyed wool in hanging ornaments.
عَنafter خَريفٍautumn rain سَقَاهُwatered it نَوءٌa rainstorm مِنَfrom الدَّلthe Bucket (continued)
عَن خَريفٍ سَقَاهُ نَوءٌ مِنَ الدَّل
وِcompletion of 'the Bucket' تَدَلَّىhung down وَلمand not تُوارَbe concealed العَراقيthe crossbars
وِ تَدَلَّى وَلم تُوارَ العَراقي
After autumn rain, a downpour from the Bucket watered it,
hanging low, its crossbars still uncovered.
لَمdid not يِعبهُmar it إلاَّexcept الأَداحيُّthe ostrich nests فقَدfor already وَبَّgrew down (continued)
لَم يِعبهُ إلاَّ الأَداحيُّ فقَد وَبَّ
رَcompletion of 'grew down' بَعضُsome الرِّئَالِthe ostrich chicks فيin الأَفلاقِthe hollows
رَ بَعضُ الرِّئَالِ في الأَفلاقِ
Nothing marred it but ostrich nests; down had already grown
on some of the ostrich chicks in the hollows.
وإرانُand a herd الثِّيرانِthe wild bulls حَولَaround نِعَاجٍwild cows
وإرانُ الثِّيرانِ حَولَ نِعَاجٍ
مُطفِلاتٍwith young يَحمِينَguard their young بِالأَوراقِwith the dusky bulls
مُطفِلاتٍ يَحمِينَ بِالأَوراقِ
And a herd of wild bulls around cows
with young, guarding them with the dusky bulls.
وتَراهُنَّand you see them كالأعِزَّةِlike the nobles فيin الَمحthe assembly (continued)
وتَراهُنَّ كالأعِزَّةِ في الَمح
فِلِcompletion of 'the assembly' أوor حِينَat a time of نِعمَةٍbounty وارتِفاقِand comfort
فِلِ أو حِينَ نِعمَةٍ وارتِفاقِ
And you see them like nobles in an assembly,
or in a time of bounty and comfort.
قَدalready تَبَطَّنتُهI traversed its interior بِكَفَّيَّin my two hands خَرَّاforward-surging (continued)
قَد تَبَطَّنتُه بِكَفَّيَّ خَرَّا
جٌcompletion of 'forward-surging' مِنَamong الخَيلِthe horses فاضِلٌsuperior فيin السِّباقِthe race
جٌ مِنَ الخَيلِ فاضِلٌ في السِّباقِ
I have traversed its heart, under my hands a forward-surging
horse, excelling in the race.
يَسَرٌtractable فيin القِيادِbeing led نَهدٌpowerfully built ذَفيفُswift العَدrunning (continued)
يَسَرٌ في القِيادِ نَهدٌ ذَفيفُ العَد
وعَبلُcompletion of 'running'; stout الشَّوَىthe limbs أَمينُsound العَراقِthe bones
وعَبلُ الشَّوَى أَمينُ العَراقِ
Easy to lead, powerfully built, swift in running,
stout of limb, sound of bone.
لَمwas not يُقَيِّلbe rested at midday حَرَّthe heat of الَمقيظِsummer ولَمand not يُلbe bridled (continued)
لَم يُقَيِّل حَرَّ الَمقيظِ ولَم يُل
جَمِcompletion of 'be bridled' لِطَوفٍfor riding about ولاnor فَسَادmischief نزِاقِrestive caprice
جَمِ لِطَوفٍ ولا فَسَاد نزِاقِ
He was not left to rest at noon in summer's heat, nor bridled
for riding about or the mischief of restive caprice,
غيرُexcept تَيسيرهmaking him ready لرَغباءَfor a coveted object إنif كاit existed (continued)
غيرُ تَيسيره لرَغباءَ إن كا
نَتcompletion of 'it existed' وَحربٌand war إنif قَلَّصَتdrew up عَنfrom ساقِa shin
نَت وَحربٌ إن قَلَّصَت عَن ساقِ
save to make him ready for a coveted prize, should there
be one, and for war if it bares its shin.
وَلهُand his is النَّعَجةُthe wild cow الَمرِيُّmilk-rich تُجاهَahead of الthe
وَلهُ النَّعَجةُ الَمرِيُّ تُجاهَ ال
رَّكبِriders عِدلاًequally بِالنَّابئwith the towering one الِمخراقِthe hard-charging one
رَّكبِ عِدلاً بِالنَّابئ الِمخراقِ
And his is the milk-rich wild cow ahead of the
riders, equally with the towering, hard-charging bull;
والخِدَبُّand the massive beast العاريbare الزَّوائدِthe appendages ملِbroad-bodied (continued)
والخِدَبُّ العاري الزَّوائدِ ملِ
حَفَّانِcompletion of 'broad-bodied' دانيclose الدِّماغِthe brain لِلآماقِto the inner eye-corners
حَفَّانِ داني الدِّماغِ لِلآماقِ
and the massive beast, bare-limbed and broad-bodied,
its brain close to the inner corners of its eyes.
