Abu Shurayh, let not our companionship grieve you.
For man is hostage to time's vicissitudes and destined death.
إنَّindeed الأَسَىsorrow قَبلَناbefore us جَمٌّabundant ونَعلَمُهand we know it
فِيماin what أُديلَsuffered a reversal مِنَamong الأَجدادِthe forefathers والأُمَمِand the nations
Indeed, sorrow was abundant before us, and we know it
In the reversals suffered by forefathers and nations.

Some of them I saw firsthand, or you recount their story,
And what you relate of ʿĀd and of Iram.

And nearer our time, how many a king and enviable fortune
Perished, and were like a shadow's shade and a dream.
