أَبكىmade weep العُيونَthe eyes وَأَذرىand scattered دَمعَهاtheir tears درَراًpearls
أَبكى العُيونَ وَأَذرى دَمعَها درَراً
مُصابُthe loss of شَيبَةَShayba بَيتِthe abode of الدينِfaith وَالكَرَمِand generosity
مُصابُ شَيبَةَ بَيتِ الدينِ وَالكَرَمِ
Eyes were made to weep, their tears scattered like pearls,
By the loss of Shayba, the abode of faith and generosity.
كانَhe was الشُجاعَthe brave one الجَوادَthe generous one الفَردَpeerless سُؤدَدُهُhis nobility
كانَ الشُجاعَ الجَوادَ الفَردَ سُؤدَدُهُ
لَهُhe has فَضائِلُvirtues تَعلوrise above سادَةَthe lords of الأُمَمِthe nations
لَهُ فَضائِلُ تَعلو سادَةَ الأُمَمِ
He was brave and generous, peerless in his nobility;
His virtues tower above the lords of nations.
مَضىpassed away أَبوfather of الحَرثِal-Harith المَأمولُthe hoped-for نائِلُهُhis bounty
مَضى أَبو الحَرثِ المَأمولُ نائِلُهُ
وَالمُنتَشىand the sought-after صَولُهُhis might فيamong الناسِthe people وَالنِعَمِand blessings
وَالمُنتَشى صَولُهُ في الناسِ وَالنِعَمِ
Abu al-Harith has passed away, whose bounty was hoped for,
And whose might was sought among people and blessings.
هُوَhe الرَئيسُthe chief الَّذيwho لاno خَلقَcreature يَقدُمُهُprecedes him
هُوَ الرَئيسُ الَّذي لا خَلقَ يَقدُمُهُ
غَداةَon the morning when يَحميhe defends عَنِon behalf of الأَبطالِthe champions بِالعَلَمِwith the banner
غَداةَ يَحمي عَنِ الأَبطالِ بِالعَلَمِ
He is the chief whom no creature precedes,
On the morning he defends the champions with the banner.
العامِرُthe one who maintains البَيتthe House بَيتthe House of اللَهِGod يَملؤُهُhe fills it
العامِرُ البَيت بَيت اللَهِ يَملؤُهُ
نوراًwith light فَيَجلوthus he dispels كُسوفَthe eclipse of القَحطِdrought وَالظُلَمِand darkness
نوراً فَيَجلو كُسوفَ القَحطِ وَالظُلَمِ
He tends the House, God's House, filling it
With light, thus dispelling the eclipse of drought and darkness.
رَبُّmaster of الفِراشِthe mat بِصَحنِin the courtyard of البَيتِthe House تَكرِمَةًas an honor
رَبُّ الفِراشِ بِصَحنِ البَيتِ تَكرِمَةً
بِذاكَthrough that فُضِّلَwere distinguished أَهلُthose of الفَخرِglory وَالقِدَمِand ancient standing
بِذاكَ فُضِّلَ أَهلُ الفَخرِ وَالقِدَمِ
Master of the mat in the House's courtyard, a mark of honor;
Through this, those of glory and ancient standing were distinguished.
بَكَتwept قُرَيشٌQuraysh أَباهاtheir father كُلَّهاall of them وَعَلىand for
بَكَت قُرَيشٌ أَباها كُلَّها وَعَلى
إِمامِهاtheir leader وَحِماهاand their refuge الثابِتِfirm الدِعَمِthe supporting pillars
إِمامِها وَحِماها الثابِتِ الدِعَمِ
All Quraysh wept for their father, and for
Their leader and refuge, whose pillars stood firm.
صَفِيُّSafiyya, addressed as Safiyy بَكِّيweep وَجوديand give freely بِالدُموعِwith tears لَهُfor him
صَفِيُّ بَكِّي وَجودي بِالدُموعِ لَهُ
وَأسعِديand join the lament ياO أُمَيمUmayma, addressed as Umaym اليَومَtoday بِالسَجَمِwith streaming tears
وَأسعِدي يا أُمَيم اليَومَ بِالسَجَمِ
Safiyya, weep and freely pour out tears for him;
And join the lament, O Umayma, today with streaming tears.
يُجِبكِwill answer you نِسوَةُwomen رَهطٍa clan مِنfrom بَنيsons of أَسَدٍAsad
يُجِبكِ نِسوَةُ رَهطٍ مِن بَني أَسَدٍ
وَالغُرِّand the radiant ones زَهرَةَZuhra بَعدَafter العُربِthe Arabs وَالعَجَمِand the non-Arabs
وَالغُرِّ زَهرَةَ بَعدَ العُربِ وَالعَجَمِ
Women of a clan from Banu Asad will answer you,
And the radiant ones of Zuhra, after the Arabs and non-Arabs.
أَلَمdid … not? يَكُنhe be زَينَthe adornment of أَهلِthe people of الأَرضِthe earth كُلِّهِمall of them
أَلَم يَكُن زَينَ أَهلِ الأَرضِ كُلِّهِم
وَعِصمَةَand the safeguard of الخَلقِhumankind مِنfrom عادٍʿAd وَمِنand from أرِمِIram
وَعِصمَةَ الخَلقِ مِن عادٍ وَمِن أرِمِ
Was he not the adornment of all the people of the earth,
And humankind's safeguard, from ʿAd and from Iram?
