    Ah, would that I knew how Ja‘far fares far away,

    and ‘Amr, and the Prophet’s enemies—his own kinsmen.

    So have the Negus’s favors reached Ja‘far

    and his companions, or has some troublemaker hindered that?

    Know—may you be beyond reproach—that you are noble,

    generous, so no stranger fares ill in your presence.

    وَأفعالَ خَيرٍ كُلُّها بِكَ لازِبُ

    Know that God has granted you greater abundance,

    and deeds of goodness, all inseparably bound to you;

    and that you are a flood of bounty with copious bucketfuls,

    whose benefit reaches enemies and kinsmen alike.
