And I struggled to meet my needs after hardship,

and fended off the burdens of living after privation.

فقد أوقدت صندوق ثيابي

فقد أوقدت صندوق ثيابي

وصب الماء في حب الدقيق

وصب الماء في حب الدقيق

For I have set my clothes chest alight,

and water has been poured into the flour jar.

فهل للناس يا للناس حر

يبيض وجه ممتحن مضيق

Is there among people—O people!—a noble man

to brighten the face of one sorely tried and in want?

أريد أخي إذا ما ثل عرشي

وصرت الى المعيشة في مضيق

فأما حين يصلح بعض حالي

But when some part of my lot improves,

then everyone is my friend.
