God bless al-Khalidi,
peerless, gallant, and eminent!
أهدىhe offered لماءto the water of المزنthe rain-clouds عنat (first part of a split word)
أهدى لماء المزن عن
دcompletes the split word 'at' جمودهits freezing نارfire السعيرthe inferno
د جموده نار السعير
To rain-cloud water he offered, upon
its freezing, the fire of the inferno;
حتىuntil إذاwhen صدرcame forth العناthe jujubes (first part of a split word)
حتى إذا صدر العنا
بcompletes the split word 'the jujubes' اليهto him عنfrom حنقrancor الصدورthe breasts
ب اليه عن حنق الصدور
until, when the jujubes came forth
to him from the rancor of breasts,
بعثتI sent اليهto him بعذرهwith his justification
بعثت اليه بعذره
منخاطريfrom my thoughts ابديI express السرورjoy
منخاطري ابدي السرور
I sent him his justification,
from my thoughts, expressing joy:
لاdo not تعذلوهreproach him فإنهfor he
لا تعذلوه فإنه
أهدىhe offered الخدودthe cheeks إلىto الثغورthe mouths
أهدى الخدود إلى الثغور
Do not reproach him, for he
has offered cheeks to mouths.
