O Sword of God's faith, the foes would not be pleased,

if your sword, like your justice, dealt fairly.

Never did you sharpen a spearhead for them in battle

but a flank of theirs rose above it.

So the meadow is stained red with star-blossoms,

and the water is tinged red with blood from chests.

The dust is a robe embroidered with vultures,

and the earth a carpet patterned with steeds.

The eagle flutters above the eagle-banner, and there meet

among the horsemen a falcon and a fallen warrior.

And the lines of your cavalry—their alifs are only

tawny spears, dotted and vowel-marked with blood.
