I leave Baghdad, not out of hatred,

and travel by night toward separation, not out of longing.

I go at dusk and dawn, and I have two guides:

the dignity of proud refusal and the humiliation of poverty.

وأرجو فتى مكرماً للندى

كما رجت الارض صوب الديم

And I hope for a young man who pays honor to generosity,

as the earth hopes for steady rain to fall.
