They tell me, “You are aloof”; yet all

they saw was a man who shunned a position of humiliation.

I see that whoever draws close to people is cheapened in their eyes,

and whoever is ennobled by self-respect is honored.

I have not given learning its due if, whenever

a prospect of gain appears, I make learning a ladder for myself.

I have always kept my honor aloof

from humiliation, counting its preservation a gain.

    ولكنَّ نفسَ الحرِّ تَحتَملَ الظَّمَا

    When told, “This is a watering place,” I say, “I see it;

but a free man's soul can endure thirst.”

I keep it above even some things that would not disgrace it,

for fear of enemies saying, “What for?” or “Why?”

Thus I remain safe from the base man's reproach,

and have come to be esteemed in the noble man's heart.

And when something eludes me, I do not spend the night

turning my thoughts back to it in regret.

    وإن مَالَ لم أُتبعهُ هَلاِّ وليتَما

    But if it comes unbidden, I accept it;

and if it turns away, I do not pursue it with “Why not?” and “If only!”

And I hold back my steps from many a gain,

if I cannot gain them with my honor intact and myself respected.

I esteem myself too highly to smile at a scowling man,

or greet with praise a man deserving blame.

And many a man seeking to enslave me through his favors has failed

to achieve it, even if he was the revered chief.

And many a favor has been a curse to a free man,

and many a gain the free man reckons a loss.

I did not expend my lifeblood in the service of learning

to serve whomever I met, but to be served.

Must I toil in planting it, only to reap humiliation?

Then following ignorance would indeed have been wiser.

    ولو عَظَّمُوه في النفوسِ لَعُظِّما

    Had the learned safeguarded it, it would have safeguarded them;

and had they exalted it in people's hearts, it would have been exalted.

But they debased it, and so became debased, and sullied

its face with greed until it grew grim.

And if you say, “Learning's fortune falters,” it only

stumbled when its sanctuary went unguarded and it was abandoned.

Not every flash of lightning that gleams for me stirs me,

nor do I accept everyone on earth as a benefactor.

But when hardship compels me, I will not rest at night,

turning my thoughts toward Najd, then Tihamah,

until I find one whose mention does not choke me

when I say, “He has done me a kindness and shown me favor.”
