ماnot الدَّهرُtime لولاكwere it not for you إلاexcept مَنطقٌspeech خَطلُsenseless
ما الدَّهرُ لولاك إلا مَنطقٌ خَطلُ
Say to the prince in whom the age takes pride:
Say to the prince whom the time took pride in,
Without you, time is nothing but senseless speech.
Without you, time would be but idle prattle.

في المجد شاده آباؤك الأُولُ
Your hands’ original achievements have spared you reliance
The works of your hands whose renown was initiated
on the glory your forefathers of old built.
By the glory your forefathers first erected.

ما زال في الناس اشباهٌ وأمثلةٌ
حتىuntil ظهرتَyou appeared فغابthen vanished الشكلُthe peer والمثلُand the equal
حتى ظهرتَ فغاب الشكلُ والمثلُ
Among people there had always been peers and equals,
The people knew pretenders and similarities
until you appeared, and peer and equal vanished.
Until you appeared, the model and the parallel vanished.
