وأطربَand enraptures مُشتاقًاone who yearns وأرضَىand appeases مُغاضِباan angry man
وأطربَ مُشتاقًا وأرضَى مُغاضِبا
Poetry is only what stirs a much-praised man,
Poetry is naught but what provokes the praised
Enraptures one who yearns, and appeases an angry man.
And delights the longing and pleases the angry

It comes obediently, its rhymes never found skittish,
It obeyed yet its rhymes were not repelling
Nor do words come to it exhausted and weary.
Nor did words come to it regretfully seeking

يبثُّونَ في آثارهنَّ المقانِبا
Among men are pursuers of rhymes: you see them
And among people are rhymes' followers you see
Dispatching cavalry squadrons along their tracks.
Spreading amidst their traces the subtle snares

وقد تركوا المعنَى مع اللَّفْظِ جانِبا
When they glimpse the rhyme's fixed consonant, they race one another,
When they glance at the rhyme letter they rush
Having left meaning and wording alike aside.
And leave aside meaning with utterance cast off

And if denied the finest speech, they make their way
And if free speech they're denied they find ways
Along its fringes, sweeping up feeble, middling verse.
To weak margins thus ravaging the meek nearby

But I cast forth every wondrous verse:
But I fling each rhetorical device that may
They spend the night at play with men's minds.
In men's minds lodge, arousing the passions' flames

They travel without setting out, and draw near though far away,
It walks yet has not traveled, draws near though remote
And win high rank for the men who memorize them.
And earns men of rank ascending steps of fame

You see men either love-struck at their mention,
You see people either enraptured by its mention
Passionately devoted, or else borrowing and plundering.
Or fervent, or even borrowing and usurping

I drive base men away from them, and fear
I ward off people's blame from it and take care
Blemishes on my ancestral honor if I fail to guard them.
As far as I'm able if I do not guard it from reproaches

And I keep them unwed until their worthy match arrives;
And I make it tough until when its match comes
Then I give them freely—full-breasted maidens with heads held high.
I allow it, auspicious maidens being suitors
