بِعَينيَin my two eyes ماwhat يُخفِيconceals الوزيرُthe vizier وماand what يُبديreveals
فنورُهماfor their light منfrom فضلِthe abundance of نعمائهhis favors عنديto me
May my two eyes bear what the vizier conceals and what he reveals,
for their light comes from the abundance of his favors to me.
سأجتهدُI shall strive أنto أُفديransom مواطئthe places trodden by نعلِهhis sandal
فإنand if أناI لمam not أقبلaccepted فماthen nothing ليis mine سوىexcept جهديmy utmost effort
I shall strive to ransom the ground beneath his sandal;
and if I am not accepted, I have nothing but my utmost effort.

وماand not خلتُI thought أنthat الشكوَcomplaint يُعدِيis contagious علىacross البعدdistance
Your complaint has indeed infected the lands and their people,
and I never thought complaint could be contagious from afar.

I knew nothing of the ailment that befell him—
by his beneficence!—until Glory came seeking redress.

I do not think that fever, however great its power,
would dare draw near the wellspring of glory.

It comes only from the blazing of his mind,
which blazed until it overflowed from the intensity of its burning.
لِيَفدِكَmay he ransom you منthe one who أصبحتَyou have become مالكَowner of رقِّهhis bondage
فَكُلُّfor all الوَرىhumankind بلindeed كلُّevery ذيpossessor of مُهجةٍa soul يُفديoffers ransom
May the one you now own as a slave ransom you;
for all mankind—indeed, every living soul—would ransom you.

The freeborn have always ransomed their slaves,
so the slave's lifeblood may shield them from what they fear.

I shrink from friends, though I harbor no mistrust;
it is deemed coldness, though loyalty to them is my constant concern.

I was nourished on it as a child; for if I seek to forsake it,
it resists, and the cradle's familiarity draws me to it.
كماjust as ألفتgrew accustomed to كفاكُماthe two hands of you both البَذلَgiving والندىand generosity

just as the hands of you both are accustomed to giving and generosity,
so you both are unable to turn away a beggar's hand.

Yet I fulfill my obligations through my intention,
and reach the furthest bounds of nearness in my distance.

And my heart, my affection, and my speech serve them,
and I do my utmost to honor my obligations to them.
فإنso if أنتُماyou both لمdo not تقبلاaccept ليfrom me عِذرَةan excuse
وأَلزمتُمانيand you both demand of me فيهin this أَكثرَmore منthan وجديmy means
So if you both will not accept an excuse from me,
and demand of me in this more than my means allow,
فقلاوthen tell, both of you لِطَبِعيto my nature يزولَto change فإنَّهfor it

then tell my nature to change, for it
recognizes your right as masters over a slave.
