وفارقتand I have parted حتىuntil ماnot أُسَرُّI rejoice بمنin anyone who دناdraws near
مخافةَfor fear of نأيٍseparation أوor حذارَin dread of صدوُدِbeing shunned
And I have parted so often that I no longer rejoice in anyone who draws near,
I parted from those whose nearness brought me no joy
For fear of separation or dread of being shunned.
Fearing separation or dreading estrangement,
وقدand indeed جَعَلتhas begun نفسيmy soul تقولُto say لمقلَتيto my eye
وقدand already قَرَّبُواthey have drawn near خوفَfor fear of التباعُدِparting جُوديshed tears freely
And my soul has begun to say to my eye,
And I accustomed my soul to say to my inner self,
Even as they draw near: 'Weep freely, for fear of parting.'
“My generosity has brought the fear of separation near,”
فليسfor ... is not قريباًnear مَنone who يخافُis feared بِعَادُهُhis departure
ولاnor مَنone who يرجَّىis hoped for قُربُهُhis nearness ببعيدِfar away
For one whose departure is feared is not near,
So one who fears from being far is not near,
Nor is one whose nearness is hoped for far away.
Nor one whose nearness is hoped for from afar.
