وأرىand I deem المديحَpraise إذاwhen عداكit passes you by نقيصةًa failing
وأرى المديحَ إذا عداك نقيصةً
فأعافُهُso I shun it ولوeven if أنهthat it is فيabout حَاتمِHatim
فأعافُهُ ولو أنه في حَاتمِ
And I deem praise a failing when it passes you by;
I see all praise unworthy if not of you
So I shun it, even if it is in praise of Hatim.
So I excuse it, though it be from Hatem.
فإذاso when امتَدحتُI praise سواكَanyone but you قالsays الشِّعرpoetry ليto me
فإذا امتَدحتُ سواكَ قال الشِّعر لي
لمdid not تَرعَyou honor حقّيmy due إذfor أَبَحتَyou made permissible مَحَارميmy sanctities
لم تَرعَ حقّي إذ أَبَحتَ مَحَارمي
So when I praise anyone but you, poetry says to me:
Yet when I praise another, poetry tells me
"You have not honored my due, for you have profaned my sanctities."
"You missed my due by exposing my secrets."
