وماand not أُقيمُI dwell بدارٍin an abode لاnot أعزُّI am honored بهاin it
وما أُقيمُ بدارٍ لا أعزُّ بها
ولاnor يقرُّsettles قراريmy stay حيثُwhere أُبتذَلُI am demeaned
ولا يقرُّ قراري حيثُ أُبتذَلُ
I do not dwell in a home where I am not honored,
And I do not dwell in an abode where I am not honored,
nor can I rest where I am treated with contempt.
Nor do I settle where I am demeaned.
وقدand indeed كفانيhas spared me انتجاعَjourneying in search of الغيثrain مَعرِفتيmy knowledge
وقد كفاني انتجاعَ الغيث مَعرِفتي
بأنَّof the fact that دَلِّيرDallīr ليfor me منfrom سَيِبهhis bounty بَدَلُa substitute
بأنَّ دَلِّير لي من سَيِبه بَدَلُ
I have been spared the need to journey in search of rain
And I have been spared the quest for rain by knowing
by knowing that, from Dalir’s bounty, I have a substitute for it.
That Dallīr, through his bounty, takes its place for me.
تَجَنَّبَتshunned نشواتraptures الخمرwine هِمَّتهُhis lofty spirit
تَجَنَّبَت نشوات الخمر هِمَّتهُ
وأَعلمَتنَاand have informed us العطاياthe gifts أنهthat he ثَملُdrunk
وأَعلمَتنَا العطايا أنه ثَملُ
His high resolve has shunned the intoxications of wine,
His lofty spirit has shunned the raptures of wine,
yet his gifts have told us that he is drunk.
And his gifts have shown us that he is drunk.
