    Have you not seen the spring rain clouds, as though

    they spread gilded brocade across the horizons—

    وكان عَبُوسا قبلَهُن مُقَطَّبا

    bringing many a tree a cheerful radiance

    though before them it was sullen and scowling;

    and many a garden that spent the winter in mourning,

    whose shoulders they adorned with fragrant robes?

    The pure wine of rain gave it a quenching draught, and it began

    to sway drunkenly whenever the east wind blew.

    It is as though Shirzad’s virtues sustain it,

    so it need no longer fear fading or growing pale.
