ولوand if ترانيyou see me وقدand already ظَفرتُI won بهwith him
ليلاًat night وسترُand the veil الظَّلامof darkness مُنسدِلُhanging down
And had you seen me, when I had won him,
At night, with darkness's veil hanging down,
وللكَرىَand for slumber فيin الجفونِthe eyelids داعيةٌa summons
وقدand already حَدَاهاurged them on حادٍa driver لهfor it عَجِلُhasty
And in the eyelids a summons to slumber,
And its hasty driver having urged them on,
وحَوِصَتand narrowed أعينُthe eyes الوُشاةِof the tale-bearers كماjust as
جَمَّشَcaressed مَعشُوقَهhis beloved الفتىthe youth الغَزلُamorous
And the tale-bearers' eyes narrowed, just as
The amorous youth caressed his beloved;
فذاكso that one مُغفٍdozing وذاكand that one مُختَلطdelirious
يَهذيhe babbles وهذاand this one كأنهas though he were ثَمِلُdrunk
So one was dozing, and another delirious,
Babbling, and this one seemed drunk.
وقلتand I said ياO سيديmy lord بَدَاappeared عَلَمُthe banner of الصبthe dawn (word continues)
حcompletion of 'dawn' وكادand was about to الظلامُthe darkness يَرتحلُdepart
And I said, "My lord, dawn's banner has appeared,
And darkness is about to depart."
ثمthen انثنىhe turned back يَبتَغيhe seeks وُساديmy pillow إذsince
أيقنَhe knew for certain أنَّthat الوُشاةَthe tale-bearers قدalready غَفَلُواthey grew heedless
Then he turned back, seeking my pillow, since
He knew for certain that the tale-bearers had grown heedless.
فباتso he spent the night يشكوhe complains وبِتُّand I spent the night أعذرُهُI excuse him
وليسand there is nothing إلاexcept العتابُreproach والِعلَلُand excuses
So he spent the night complaining, and I excusing him,
And there was nothing but reproach and excuses.
لَخلتَنَاyou would surely have thought us ثمّةَthere شَعبتيtwo shoots of غُصُنٍa bough
يَومَon a day of صباًeast wind نَلتَويwe twist ونَعتَدِلُand we straighten
You would surely have thought us there two shoots of a bough,
On a day of east wind, twisting and straightening.
ياoh طِيبَهَاits sweetness ليلةًa night نَعِمتُI found bliss بهاin it

Oh, how sweet the night I delighted in—
Radiant, with kisses the least of its delights!
