O peerless one of the age in kingship and nobility,

And matchless one of the era among non-Arabs and Arabs,

And you, through whom the ascendant of your radiant Egypt

Has grown auspicious, and she has gained from you her desire.

I do not look to you for fulfillment of what was promised

By Your Excellency in largesse and ranks.

For you are rain, and rain's custom is

To come and quench thirst without promise or request.

And indeed the company of builders got the better of me,

After despairing, and brought me to suffering.

And I had been at ease, free of their schemes, with no need

Of a house whose construction depleted my earnings.

And, despite its cramped size, its construction began

In the month of your birth, loftier than Rajab.

And if only, when they saw how little I had in hand,

They had left me be in this ruined house.

Instead, they swore they would finish it at once,

    Even without wages—this is astonishing!

So I kept borrowing until I was struck by what

Had nearly brought me to ruin, but for you.

And your eye of justice was not asleep

To my plight, though the ill fortune of letters overtook me.

And debts besieged me, which nothing can repel

From me save white silver and gold.

And where am I to find them both, unless there comes

A decree whose light dispels the darkness of distress?

May you ever mend the brokenness of humankind throughout

All time, with the wealth you bestow,

As long as praise of you grows in honor—praise that has already filled

The registers of the books that are recited.
