الخمر متلفةٌ لدينك فاحذر

ودليلةٌ نحو الخنا والمنكر

Wine ruins your faith, so beware,

And leads to vice and sin.

وهي الجحيم معجّلاً ومؤجلاً

فاثن العنان عن الجحيم وأقصر

Hell awaits now or later;

Pull away lest you fall in.

كم ورَّطت في عُسرةٍ من موسر

كم ورَّطت في عطبة من مُعسِر

How many wealthy has it left poor,

How many poor made poorer yet.

ما استودع العقلاءُ طيّ ضلوعهم

شيئاً أضرّ من الشّراب المسكر

What worse than this drunkard's brew

Did the wise ever try to forget?

يا من يمدُّ إلى المدام يمينهُ

شُلَّت يمينُك بائعاً أو مشتري

You who reach out your hand toward the cup -

Whether selling or buying, that hand is paralyzed.

سِيَّان ألقيت البنان على الطّلا

للشرب أو ألقيتها في مجمر

Offering cups on the carpet, or throwing them in the flames,

Two fires - but this one only shows

ناران إلاَّ أنّ هذي لا ترى إلاّ

بمقلة مبصر مستبصر

To the seeing, clear-sighted eye.

Purify your heart of the filth of its sin,

طهّر فؤادك من نجاسة إثمها

أًَو لاَ فأعدد للعذاب الأكبر

Or prepare for the greatest punishment.

You are unclean. No repentance,

أنت المنجّس ما شربت ندامة

ولو اغتسلت بماء سبعةأبحر

Not seven oceans, can wash you clean.

What would you want with a deadly drink

ماذا تريد إلى شرابٍ مُورِدٍ

وِرداً يسوءك ربُّه في المصدر

That damages, and your Lord condemns?

You will face a reckoning, terrified,

تَرِدُ الحسابَ به وأنت مروّعٌ

تخشى العقاب وأنت منه بمنظر

Fearing punishment, in plain view of the Judge.

If you want security, then do not walk

إن كنت ترغبُ في الأمان فلا تكن

ممن يسير على الطريق الأوعر

The most treacherous road.

Would you sell your faith, misled, for a sip?

أتبيع دينك في الضلال بجرعة

قُبِّحتَ بطّالاً زمان المتجر

Shame on you, trader of faith.

What an accursed sip, so hateful,

يا شؤمها من جُرعة مذمومةٍ

سلبتك دينك حيث لم تتشعر

That steals your faith before you know.

On Judgment Day you will regret, full of sorrow,

فكأنني بك في القيامة نادماً

أسفاً تعضُّ أنامل المتحسِّر

Nibbling your fingers in despair.

If you will not repent it, you are a joke

إن لم تتب منها فإنك ضحكة

للناظرين وسُبة في المعشر

To beholders, mocked in every gathering.

Lose your reason and you will be an animal

وإذافقدت العقلَ كنت بهيمةً

في جلد إنسان وحسبك فانظر

In human skin - see for yourself!

I have advised you. If you accept my counsel

ولقد نصحتكَ إن قبلتَ نصيحتي

يا حاضراً وكأنه لم يحضر

O living one, as though you never lived.

By God, no hearer understands the truth,

والله لا فهم الحقيقة سامعٌ

قد بات في علم الضرورة يمتري

Wandering in evident misguidance.

Beware the punishment for drinking it,

فاحذر عليك عقوبة في شربها

وإذا أنبت إلى المتاب فأبشر

And if you incline to repent, rejoice.

O Lord, we err in ignorance,

يا ربِّ أنا مخطئون جهالة

فاصفح لنا واستر علينا وأغفر

So pardon us, screen us, and forgive.
