    يدال علينا تارة وندالُ

    The wars of separation and nearness to you have changing fortunes;

    at times victory goes against us, and at times it is ours.

    Is it not time you found an end to your absence,

    so hopes may be fulfilled and my condition improve?

    نعمتُ عليها لو يدوم وصال

    My heart has indeed dwelt in a paradise of union with you;

    I lived in bliss there—if only union would endure!

    Were my sorrow to lighten for an instant, I would fly toward you,

    but the burdens of separation are heavy.

    قضى رمقٌ منه وضاق مجال

    And now that you have departed, I am indeed in a calamity's grip;

    because of it, my last breath is spent, and room to move has narrowed.

    So it made my grief for you lawful, though forbidden,

    and forbade my patience without you, though lawful.

    When news of you grows obscure, my sighing

    is an answer, and the tears of both eyes a question.

    In your absence—when your nearness alone brings solace—

    can gardens delight, or the north wind be gentle?

    وحسب المعالي فطنة ونوال

    And you are the one who has excelled in generosity and insight;

    and insight and bounty suffice for eminence.

    فبورك مقصود وبرّ مقال

    You journeyed to the abode of prophethood and guidance;

    so blessed be the destination, and true the word.

    You fulfilled the duty of pilgrimage resolutely, and were not

    like one whom impetuosity and aggression made heedless.

    Whoever's reason betrays him in the pursuit of good

    has a fetter on his foot from what he has done.

    When a thought ranges through the science of doctrine,

    you leave your opponent's right hand turned into a left.

    You wield a mind whose sea casts forth pearls

    in succession, while the furthest reach of others' thought is a mirage.

    When the noonday sun dazzles a beholder,

    he does not care if a crescent moon disappears.

    You renewed truth's proof through fine exposition,

    then charged with a sword gleaming with polish.

    So every elegant and well-founded utterance

    is directed to you or referred to you.

    No wonder you have taken the lead in piety,

    for faith and worldly life have their course and their men.

    وفي كلِّ شيء مشبه ومثال

    Excellence reminds me of you whenever I mention it;

    and in everything there is a likeness and an image.

    Nothing has consoled me enough to make me forget you in its presence,

    even if kin are kind or wealth is abundant.

    If I could rightly claim to have forgotten you, I would claim it,

    for comfort—but forgetting you is impossible.

    For in every affection but yours there is doubt,

    and in every friend but you there is cause for criticism.
