وبسطand the spreading of نداكyour bounty ليسis not إلىtoward انقباضcontraction
The proof of your eminence admits no objection.
Your ascendance is not to be disputed,
And your outstretched bounty never draws back.
And your outstretched hand is not to withdraw.
وفيكand in you محاسنٌbeauties لفظاًin word ومعنىand in meaning

And in you are beauties of word and meaning;
In you there are virtues in word and meaning,
You have risen to shoulder their burden—how mightily!
Rising to any task with vigor.

وجدُّكand your good fortune شاهدٌa witness ونداكand your bounty قاضيa judge
The envious acknowledge them—and why not?
Even enviers admit to them, so why not?
And your good fortune bears witness, while your bounty judges.
You as witness and your hand as judge.
بقيةُsurviving heir منجبيكَyour noble progenitors أباًfather وجداًand grandfather
وبالباقينand through the survivors تُعتبرare appraised المواضيthe departed
You are the surviving heir of your noble forebears, father and grandfather;
The rest of your noble fathers and grandfathers
And through those who remain, the departed are appraised.
Set the example for the meadows.
وأورثهمand he made them heirs وقدwhile already كثرواthey grew numerous وطابواand were noble
كرثlike inheriting (unclear reading) الزهرthe flowers أنفاسbreaths الرياضthe gardens
And he made them heirs, numerous and noble as they were,
And they bequeathed to their many fine descendants
Like flowers inheriting the gardens’ breaths [reading uncertain].
Plenty, like the breaths of fragrance from gardens.
فهذاso this النورthe light منfrom تلكthose المشاكيthe lamp-niches
وهذاand this النهرthe river منfrom تلكthose الحياضthe pools
So this light comes from those lamp-niches,
This light is from those lofty hills,
And this river from those pools.
This stream from those irrigated meadows.
أتانيcame to me عنconcerning أبيAbu (father of) الفضلal-Fadl ارتحالٌa departure
ثنانيit bent me بينbetween وجدlonging وارتماضand burning grief
News came to me of Abu al-Fadl’s departure;
News reached me of the departure of Abu al-Fadl,
It left me torn between longing and burning grief.
That saddened me, torn between affection and grief.
فلمso did not نحنwe bend الضلوعthe ribs علىaround سلوٍforgetfulness
ولمand did not نطوwe fold الجفونَthe eyelids علىover اغتماضclosing the eyes
So we did not fold our ribs around forgetfulness,
Yet we, though wounded, do not complain,
Nor fold our eyelids shut in sleep.
Nor have we closed our eyes in sorrow.
فراقُparting from النفسthe soul ليسis not عنby اختيارchoice
وفقدُand the loss of الروحthe spirit ليسis not عنby التَّراضيmutual consent
Parting with one’s soul is not by choice,
Parting with a soul is not by choice,
And losing one’s spirit is not by mutual consent.
Nor is losing a spirit by agreement.
ومنand whoever يعتضtakes in exchange خليلاًa close friend منin place of خليلٍa close friend
فماyet not عُوضتُI was given in exchange خِلاًa close friend منin place of عياضIyad
And though one may take one friend in another’s place,
He who loses a friend from among friends
I have been given no friend in place of Iyad.
Will not be compensated with a replacement.

And a meeting with him is a debt owed me, but
I am indebted to him in meeting him, but
I see the days stall whenever I demand repayment.
I see time delays in paying the debt.

O Abu al-Fadl, time, as you see it,
Abu al-Fadl, time is unstable in gathering and dispersing, as you can see,
Turns between firm binding and unravelling.
I accepted the separation, though it angers me,
رضيتُI was content عنwith الفراقparting وفيهthough in it سخطresentment
وإنيand indeed I عنwith فراقكparting from you غيرnot راضcontent
I have accepted parting, though it holds bitterness,
Yet I am not pleased to be separated from you.
Yet I am not content to part from you.
So go slowly and return swiftly,

كصقرlike a falcon فيin علوascent وانقضاضand swooping down
So travel unhurriedly, and return swiftly,
Like a hawk in high flight and swooping down.
Like a falcon rising high and swooping down.

And may He of obedience and contentment give you fortune.
With your good fortune obedient and tractable.

When have the claims of every unyielding soul proved true
With approval from sullen, squinting eyes?
Through the attestation of languid eyes?
