فبانت فلي من غيرها الخُزنُ والحَزنُ
She was a dwelling place for joy;
She was a source of joy for me,
Then she departed; all else brings me hardship and grief.
But without her came only sorrow and grief.

سجالاً يكلُّ الليل عنهن الوزن
May rain fall as long as her image lives,
While alive, her memory
In bucketfuls that defy all weighing through the night.
Weighed on me all through the night.

If the rain clouds do not laugh over her in lightning flashes,
If joy did not make her eyes sparkle,
Nor weep from their eyelids—then may no rain clouds rise.
Nor did she shed a tear, there was no joy.
