    O envier of another's blessings,

and you who follow your own path into folly:

you are in the depths of a sea of gifts,

yet envy the poor man in its little stream.

The full moon of night has already guided your gaze,

yet you do not turn your eyes from his star.

You envy him in all his circumstances—

though you may have earned more than he has—

in his good food, in his drink,

in his soft clothes, in his mount.

O sleeper who envies his brothers,

God has favored them, so wake up!

Look with the eye of thought at this and that:

the path to truth is not obscure.

Your state will not last, nor will his.

How near the thirsty man is to his drinking place!

And the full moon, if its radiance delights you,

will surely grieve you when it sets.

Never befriend an envious man, for envy is

the first sin through which God was disobeyed.
