O defier of counsel and admonition,

dwelling between “take this” and “give here,”

who trails his robes in exultation and pride,

deaf to the sound of admonitions:

Has the gathering of your companions deceived you, though it is a gathering

that ends, if you reflect, in separation?

And has an intruding desire made you feel safe from a night attack?

Yet how many others have been caught unawares in a night attack!

It is as though you do not see, at every moment,

    death’s arrows in every direction.

You hope for Paradise and fear the Fire,

but can a quest succeed without a means of reaching it?

Hold fast as best you can—perhaps you will be saved—

to the rope of lasting righteous deeds.

And give God a pledge that you will quench

the fire of evil deeds with the water of tears,

so that perhaps you may attain the abode of Eden,

and thus gain happiness and salvation.
