دُمُوعِيmy tears أبَتrefused إلاّanything but انسِكاباًpouring forth لَعَلَّهاperhaps they
بِمَكنُونِto the hidden depths of حُبِّيmy love عِندَbefore خِلِّيَmy beloved تَشهَدُbear witness
My tears would do nothing but pour forth; perhaps they
may testify before my beloved to my hidden love.
دَنَوتُI drew near فأقصَانيand he drove me away فَعُدتُthen I returned فَرَدَّنيand he turned me back
فَلاso not هُوَيُدنِينيhe draws me near ولاand not أناI أبعُدُwithdraw
I drew near, and he drove me away; I returned, and he turned me back.
So he does not draw me near, nor do I withdraw.
دُهِيتُI was stricken بِفقدَانٍby the loss لِمَنof one whom قَدindeed وَجَدتُهُI found him
فَلاso no إمَدمَعُtears يَرقَاcease flowing ولاand no وَجدَlonging يَخمُدُdies down
I was stricken by losing one whom I had found.
So tears do not cease, nor does longing die down.
دَبيبُthe creeping of الهَوىlove بينَbetween الضُّلُُوعthe ribs مُؤجِّجٌkindling
لهَيبَa blaze of اشتياقٍlonging فيهِin it للقَلبfor the heart مَوردُa watering place
Love's creeping between the ribs kindles
a blaze of longing, where the heart finds a watering place.
دَعانيleave me, you two فَمَنfor whoever ذَاقَtasted الهَوىlove ثَمّthen لمdid not يَنَلattain
وصَالَunion with حَبيبٍa beloved كيفَhow لاnot يتَنَهَّدُhe sighs
Leave me be, you two! Whoever has tasted love, then failed to gain
union with a beloved—how could he not sigh?
دَعاوَىclaims of الأسَىsorrow عِنديin my view عَلَيكَagainst you صَحِيحةٌwell founded
فَقَلبيَfor my heart خَفَّاقٌthrobbing وَجَفنِيand my eyelid مُسَهَّدُkept sleepless
My claims of sorrow against you are well founded:
for my heart throbs, and my eyelid is sleepless.
دَمِيmy blood بِكًَbecause of you مَسفوكٌshed وَدمعِيand my tears بسَفكِهِat its shedding
فَيَصلُحُso it is healed قَلبيmy heart فيكَin you مِنfrom حَيثُwhere يَفسُدُit is ruined
My blood is shed because of you, and my tears at its shedding;
so my heart finds healing in you at the very source of its ruin.
دَفَائنُburied treasures of حُبٍّlove فيin لُحودِgrave-niches of جَوانحٍribs
لهابِكَfor them, through you حَشرٌa resurrection كُلَّevery يومٍday ومَوعِدُand an appointed meeting
Love's buried treasures, in the grave-niches of the ribs,
have, through you, a resurrection and an appointed meeting each day.
دُجايَmy darkness إذاwhen واصَلتَyou grant me union يَومٌa day مُؤبَّدٌeverlasting
ويَومِيand my day إذَاwhen أبعَدتَyou keep me far away لَيلٌa night مُسَرمَدُendless
My darkness, when you grant me union, is everlasting day;
and my day, when you keep me far away, is endless night.
دُنُوُّكَyour nearness أقصَىthe utmost ماwhat أقحِبُّI love وأشتَهيand I desire
فإنand if نِلتُهُI attain it فَهوَthen it is النَّعيمُbliss المُخَلَّدُeverlasting
Your nearness is what I love and desire most;
and if I attain it, it is everlasting bliss.
