    I wished for a stolen moment of union with the beloved,

    yet not every soul attains what it wishes.

    I adorned myself with remembrance, and it is a sign

    of a sigh hidden within my ribs.

    كذاكَ عِتَاقُ الخَيلِ طَوعُ الأعِنَّةِ

    Some people marveled at my yielding to love;

    likewise, noble steeds submit to the reins.

    فَجُنَّت لَه نَفسِي بما قَد أجَنَّتِ

    The beloved, whose slave I am, appeared to me;

    so my soul went mad for him because of what it had concealed.

    فَجُنَّت لَهُ نَفسِي بما قَد أجَنَّتِ

    He revealed himself to my mind, not my senses, and my soul yielded;

    so my soul went mad for him because of what it had concealed.

    My night grew long in his absence, as though

    my heart were being turned upon spearpoints because of him.

    I sought solace in him by wishing for his nearness,

    and nothing remained of me but my repeated moaning.

    Things changed for me through his nearness,

    and nothing remained of me but my repeated moaning.

    Things changed for me through losing him,

    so my morning's light is in the gloom of night.

    Every answering voice stirs longing in me,

    and every plaintive voice brings me love's anguish.

    Be gentle with my heart in its love for you, for truly

    your distance is my fire, and your nearness my paradise.
