نقَضتُI unraveled عُرىَthe bonds of صَبرِيmy patience وَأَبرَمتُand I fastened ضِدَّهاtheir opposite
فَهاso here أَناI am فيin الحالَينِboth states مُكتَئِبٌdejected مُضنَىworn out
I unraveled the bonds of my patience and bound their opposite fast.
So here I am, in both states, dejected and worn out.
نَحِيلٌgaunt يُعنِّينيtorments me العِيانُthe sight إذاwhen بَداit appears
صَبَاحاًat dawn ويُشجِينيand saddens me الحَمامُthe doves إذاwhen غَنَّىthey sing
Gaunt, I am tormented by the sight when it appears
at dawn, and the doves sadden me when they sing.
نَفَيتُI denied سِواهُall besides him إذwhen عَلِمتُI knew ثُبوتَهُhis reality
ومُعتَقَدُand belief التَّوحيدِin oneness يَبقَىendures وَقَدand has already أفنىbrought annihilation
I denied all but him when I knew his reality.
And belief in oneness endures, having wrought annihilation.
نِدِائيmy call إِلَيهِto him صَاعِدٌrising كُلَّevery سَاعَةٍhour
وإنand although كُنتُI was لمnot أشعُرI perceive لِحاظاًglances ولاnor أُذناan ear
My call rises to him every hour,
though I have perceived it with neither glance nor ear.
نَهاريmy day وَلَيليand my night جنَّتانtwo gardens بِذكرهِthrough remembrance of him
فهاso here أنَاI am مِنfrom حُسنىbliss نُقِلتُI was carried إلىto حُسنىbliss
My day and my night are two gardens through remembrance of him.
So here I am, carried from bliss to bliss.
نأيتَyou went far away فَلمso did not أطِبقI close علىupon سَلوَةٍsolace حَشىًa breast
صَدَدتَyou turned away فلمso did not أُغمِضI shut علىupon سِنَةٍslumber جَفناan eyelid
You went far away; my breast could hold no solace.
You turned away; I could not close an eyelid in slumber.
نَقَلتُكَI moved you مِنfrom عَينَيmy eyes لِقَلبِيَto my heart غَيرَةًout of jealousy
فأنتَfor you مَحَلُّthe place of الرُّوحِthe soul مِنّيَwithin me أوor أدنىnearer
I moved you from my eyes to my heart out of jealousy,
for you are within me where my soul is—or nearer still.
نَعيمٌbliss مُقِيمٌabiding لَمحَةًa glance إنif بَذلتَهاyou grant it
وعَبدُكَand your servant ياO مَولايَmy master يَرتَقِبُawaits الإِذناpermission
A glance, if you grant it, is abiding bliss.
And your servant, O my master, awaits permission.
نَصيبُthe share of الورَىhumankind فيin الحُبِّlove لَفظٌa word مُجَرَدٌbare
وقلبيand my heart ولاand no فَخرٌboasting لهُit has اللَّفظُthe word والمعنىand the meaning
Humankind's share in love is a mere word;
but my heart—not to boast—has both the word and the meaning.
